The Amazing Adventures of the Underdog Alliance

It is another sunny day at the World Summit, and Sealand is ready for a full day of taking notes when people talk and driking melon soda floats, and swinging his feet on the large chairs, and inspiring awe and admiration in the hearts of every nation that hears him speak. Yes, surely today is going to be one of those days.

Sealand shows up early, and takes a seat, his breif case (which is actually made out of card board and duck tape, and colored in markers and crayons, cause who has the money to wasted on a silly little breif case when you can be creative and just make one yourself! It even has handle just like all the other nations! And when it breaks its super easy to fix!) sits on his lap and he fiddles with it.

The first nation he sees happens to be the trembling one. The small trembling one, Latvia! Peter has done a lot of work memorizing everyone's name, so he knows Lativa on sight.

"Good Morning!" Sealand sing-songs in the small nations direction. He offers a bright smile and waves.

Latvia hasn`t been at the World Summit for long when he finds himself already shaking miserably. He hates these meetings so much! It`s not that he doesn`t like seeing his fellow Baltics and other nations. It`s just that certain other nations are present as well, and he would much rather stay in bed and cower under the covers than be forced to see them again. But alas, he has no choice. He`s a nation, and his attendance is mandatory...even if it means crying before Russia and having Belarus`s knife pointed at his back.

He slinks timidly down the hall, dragging his feet and already trembling at the thought of having to sit in the same room as his former conqueror when suddenly, he hears a cheery voice calling to him. Even though the tone is friendly, he`s still startled enough to nearly jump out of his skin.

"A-AH! Oh...hello there," he mumbles embarrassedly, seeing the one who startled him is just a young boy even smaller than he is. He can`t remember ever seeing him before, and his presence confuses him. Could he really be a new nation? Latvia supposes there`s only one way to find out. "Um, sorry to ask, but- who are you?"

Sealand is a little disapointed at not being remembered, but he gives the other nation a warm smile and introduces himself.

"I'm Sealand, I'm a small country, but I've got a big heart! We should be friends Latvia!"

Sealand swings his feet happily as he smiles up at the other boy. And now that he looks closer, the nation is still trembling. A part of him wants to jump up and hold him still, but that would be rude so Sealand doesn't.

Latvia gapes in surprise. He had no idea this boy knew his name and feels a little embarrassed, as if he should remember him too. But no matter how hard he tries, he still doesn't recall ever meeting him. It could just be a gap in his memory. He's still trembling a bit from being surprised, but takes a deep breath to calm himself down. Latvia wishes he didn't always shake when he comes to these meetings, but there's no helping it. Not with Russia possibly lurking behind every corner...

He is touched when Sealand offers his friendship, though. Barely any of the nations besides Estonia and Lithuania pay him much mind, and he often feels ignored. It would be nice to have more friends here, so Latvia manages a smile and nods in response.

"I-it's nice to meet you," he says. "Of course we can be friends. Small nations ought to stick together, right? If there's anything you need to know, just ask me, okay?"

And suddenly Latvia feels a rush of pride. He's the older one for once! For so long, he's been treated like the youngest, the one that needs to be looked after and taken care of the most. Maybe now he can finally be a big brother to someone instead of a child.

Sealand's eyes light up and his smile spreads father on his face. "Great! If you need any help I'll always come and help! I'll make sure no one bullies you!"

With that Sealand hops from the chair and outstretches his hand. "Lets shake on it! Best friends forever!"

Sealand can't fight down the giddiness inside of him. He should have done this sooner! He's never had a friend before that he could play with and spend time with! Not that he has tons of time, but still! A friend sounds amazing!

Latvia`s eyes light up with amusement at Sealand`s offer for protection. A nation even smaller than him standing up to someone like Russia? Still, it`s appreciated. He knows he`ll feel better having someone else around who cares about him, even if said person is as young as this boy. It always helps to have someone to watch your back.

Latvia takes the outstretched hand and gives it a firm shake, trying to appear more confident than he knows he is. His smile brightens and he senses a good vibe coming off his new friend. He may not know him well, but something already tells him they`ll get along just fine.

"Friends forever," Latvia agrees happily.

This cheerful excitement coming off the other boy is so new to him. No one he`s been around has ever been quite so eccentric. Given the life he`s been living so far, it`s no surprise. The other Baltics were always too fearful to show much happiness, and Russia`s version of "happy" was nothing short of terrifying for the Latvian. He hopes that having Sealand around will bring out a better side of him, a side he`s forgotten while living in fear.

Sealand sees the amusement in Latvia's eyes and puffs out his chest. He's definitely the best nation to have an alliance with! So Latvia must be super happy!

"Wonderful! Best friends forever! So Best Friend Latvia, what do you like to do? I should say it would be silly not to know what my best friend likes doing for fun! I like working hard, swimming, and boating!"

Sealand nods his head after every one of his likes, and looks over at Latvia with an energetic smile.

Latvia`s face turns a bit red at his new title. It sounds silly, but at the same time, he likes it. He`s never had a best friend before. The closest thing he`s had are the other Baltics, and they still treat him more like a little brother. Sadly, though they shared the same pain of serving under Russia, they also have little in common.

“Um, well,” Latvia starts, realizing that his interests must seem pretty boring in comparison to Sealand`s, “I like things like reading and poetry...anything quiet and relaxing, really. That`s my favorite way to pass the time. Your hobbies do sound exciting, though.”

He smiles back at the boy, hoping for a positive response. Latvia feels like such a shut-in, but he`s also curious to try new things, granted they`re safe and not overly terrifying. If someone as small as Sealand can handle them, he can too, right?

Sealand's eyes brighten. "Me too! I love reading! I read a lot actually. I visit the library a lot! I don't own many books of my own you see. But I really like to read! What kind of books do you like? I enjoy fantasy novels and science fiction the most."

Sealand waves his hands at the mention of his favorite type of novels, and teeters on his feet expectantly as he waits for Latvia to respond. He's never had a best friend, so he's not sure if he's messing this up, but as long as he works at it, it should all work out any way, right?

Latvia hesitates before answering him. He's kind of embarrassed about the kind of books he reads, actually, but he decides it's best to be honest if the two of them are going to be friends.

"I...like romance novels," he admits, hoping the boy won't ask too many questions. The kind of books he reads aren't exactly for kids, after all. "But I enjoy reading other kinds of books too!" he puts in. "Fantasy and science fiction are fun."

He's glad Sealand is so friendly towards him. Usually, it's hard for him to meet new people, being so quiet. He's also one of the youngest nations at the conference, so having someone less experienced than him around makes him feel wiser and proud. He just hopes that Sealand doesn't find out what a coward he really is too soon.

"It's still a while till the meeting starts," he says. "Did you want to go grab a soda or something?"

Sealand is going to ask what kind of romance novels Latvia likes, but then realizes that he doesn't know much about romance novels. He decides its a topic he will tackle at length with Latvia later. Since they're friends now theres no need to ask all the questions he wants to now. They'll have time, or so he hopes.

Though he has this sinking feeling that once Latvia realizes that he isn't a recognized country that he'll dump him like a lead balloon. Its true that Sealand can't help in any political way, so now that he thinks about it, having a friend for him is a completely one sided affair. He'll be using Latvia, and Latvia will get nothing in return. That somehow doesn't set well with Sealand, but for the life of him he can't think of any way around it. It unsettles him quite a bit, but Sealand tries not to let it show.

When Latvia suggests they grab something to drink Sealand is brought from his musing and smiles at his new best friend.

"Sure! Lets go get something! My treat!! Its what best friends do!" Maybe thats it! He's heard of other countries giving each other money when they're friends! Sealand's never had much luck with money, but if he'll get a friendship out of it he's willing to spend some here and there!

He grabs onto Latvia's hand and skips down the hallway toward the vending machines, secretly hoping that Latvia doesn't want an expensive drink from the bar or anything.

Latvia is caught by surprise when Sealand takes a hold of his hand and starts hauling him down the hallway. He must have made a good suggestion if the younger boy seems this eager. It’s so nice that he even offered to pay, but Latvia just doesn’t feel comfortable taking money from a kid.

“N-no, you don’t have to do that!” he stammers. “I’m your senior, so I should be the one treating you!”

Wow. He’s never been able to say that to anyone before. It makes him feel just a little giddy inside. Maybe Sealand won’t take well to being taken care of, though. There’s a fierce independence about the other boy that Latvia already admires. Whereas he’s almost always had to rely on someone for protection and security before finally gaining independence, Sealand seems to be doing fine looking after himself and is still so young too. Latvia feels a tinge of envy, but the other boy’s spirit still has him in a good mood. He must have had some good luck not to be conquered or claimed by anyone. Latvia will have to ask him about his country’s history later.

Theres that ugly 'senior' word and Sealand almost huffs and lets go of Latvia's hand when it exits the nations lips. Sealand hates that word, always has and probably always will. Its something he can't help, so what if he's younger than everyone else! Its not that important. He wants to say that, to emphatically deny the importance of age, but he just made his first real friend, and Sealand doesn't want to ruin that so he doesn't say anything in regards to the comment. He keeps his face smiling and happy as he responds.

"No! Its my job as your new best friend! I'll get you an awesome drink, just you wait and see!"

"Oh...okay, then. Thank you!"

Latvia isn't surprised when Latvia refuses his offer. The boy really seems to want to do something for him, so the older nation decides he may as well let him. He still feels a bit guilty, but he's sure he'll find a way to repay the favor sometime.

He sees that he's being hauled towards a vending machine and feels a little better. At least the drinks here aren't expensive. There's so many choices, though, and the young nation finds himself being a bit indecisive.

"Um...what do you think is good? I haven't tried some of these...That green one does look interesting, though!"

Of course a vending machine at the world conference center would have a nice variety to suit different nations' tastes. If this turns out to be pretty good, Latvia might have to grab a drink here more often.

Latvia doesn't seam like he's unhappy with getting drinks at the vending machine, so Sealand is thankful for that. He watches as Latvia looks over the different drinks and when he spots one and points Sealand looks as well with a bright smile.

"Thats Melon Soda! Its very delicious! Japan makes it, he sends me a lot of it! They also make wonderful floats if you have ice cream! I'll get it for you and you can try it. If you don't like it, just tell me and I'll get you something else!"

Sealand reaches into his brief case and pulls out his pocket book and matching pen. With a few neat strokes he copies down the amount he will be getting and the cost before placing the pen and pocket planner back into his bag. A second rummage reveals his old beat up wallet. Standing on his tip toes so he doesn't have to look up at the machine, Sealand puts in the money and pushes the appropriate buttons.

The drinks are a little more expensive here then they would be at the grocery store, but Sealand isn't about to mention that or the juice box also in his card board brief case. He doesn't want to seem cheap or tacky.

He hands one to Latvia and takes the other for himself.

"Let me know if you like it!"

It will be a good thing if he does, Peter gets a lot of melon soda for free from Japan, so if Latvia likes it he won't have to pay for drinks any more!
