They can live on the Jones' Ranch, Al can be legally married to Matt's sister, Matt to Al's. They go to church every sunday like everyone else, be 'good citizens', and just say they're all livin' on the ranch cause [Amelia] can't bring herself to leave Al on his own, even with [Madeline] there to keep him company. Canada (12:43:42 AM): Nice to know you figured everything out...XD United States (12:43:48 AM): Yup.

| RP up until this point. - Spoiler:
It wasn't often Amelia did something quite this wild. She was well known in the town for being a bit of a nutter, since she didn't often go out of her way to act lady like, and more often than not wore clothes better suited to her brother. She was known for flirting, sure, but only after a few whiskeys, and never for anything more than play, but something about that railroad worker caught her eye, and she just couldn't deny the chance when it came up, and damn was she glad she hadn't. Most of the men in town were tall, and baked, and most of them married. The ones closer to her age were so gun-hoe, and idiotic she spent more time wanting to smack them than anything else. But Matthew was a looker, and a charmer, and who could blame a girl for wanting to have a bit of fun with him? That tan skin, muscles, and those rough hands were the best thing she thought she'd ever felt. Even the sweat making her hair cling to her neck and face, and the intial pain of penetration couldn't ruin the moment. Her legs wound around his waist, and hands clawing at his shoulders, she couldn't help the moans and gasps, arching and twisting, trying to thrust back, forgetting for a moment that they weren't in the most private of places.
She was beautiful, with eyes so blue like he had never seen before and a smile so coy and playful it was impossible not to stare. Amelia... and such a beautiful name it was, and she had come so full of life and snarky remarks to his increasingly boring job, how could he not notice, how could he not talk to her. Ah but Matthew was a gentleman, even if his current position put that in doubt. He would have never made such an advance on a lady he had only met, but after hours of talking and after she had drunk almost as much beer as he had... it was something unavoidable. She had taken him to her house, and even though he knew it was wrong he hadn't put up a fight. When her body pressed against his, he knew he was lost and couldn't turn back, he had dropped all inhibitions then, touched her in every place, every bit of skin, over the unusal clothes she was wearing, it wasn't something he often so in a woman... but he found it suited her. Her breasts were only slightly visible where he had popped the buttons of it, they were beautiful, just a dash of pink that if Matthew weren't busy looking at, he would lick and bite. It had been so easy to get lost in her, to push her against the wall and grab a strong hold of her legs, he didn't even worry she could bruise, he somehow knew she could take it. When he buried himself inside her seemed as though time had stopped for a moment, he drank her small cry of pain on a kiss, had she been a virgin then? Part of Matthew felt bad at the thought, this was supposed to be reserved for her husband on her wedding, but there was no way he was stopping now. Not that it really mattered anymore. He kissed her neck as he trust in, slow but deep, trying to get as deep as he could inside her, taste her as much as it was possible.
]Alfred didn't normally worry about what his sister was up too. He knew she could handle herself (had learned that the hard way when they were just kids), so when she didn't come home before dark he wasn't concerned. She'd gone into town, and he knew she'd be taken care of, and someone would bring her home if she needed help. It was one of the good things about their small town, and the fact that everyone knew the Jones kids, knew how hard the two had it now that they were running the farm by themselves, and were always willing to help out. So Alfred had made himself comfortable at home after he'd finished his own chores, and got all the horses back into their stalls and everything closed up for the night. It wasn't until rather late that he noticed something off. The dog was barking, which he wouldn't have done if it were just Amelia, so Al grabbed his shotgun, and headed outside. He was hoping it was just the Guthrie kids, they'd taken to sneaking out to the farm late at night to rile up the horses. It took him only a few minutes to make it out to the barn, to realize that that was not the sounds of boys stirring up trouble. Grinding his teeth, Alfred entered the barn, and pointed his rifle up towards the roof of the barn, giving firing it once as a warning, before he held his lantern up in the direction of the noises. He didn't really want to see what he knew was there, but it couldn't be avoided.
Amelia was so wrapped up in Matthew that she didn't notice the light from the lantern or the footsteps, or that damned old collie her brother had brought home ages ago. The gun shot, however went off just as she was half-way through moaning out Matthew's name. She was so close, she could feel the heat coiling tight in her stomach, and at the loud bang, her legs tightened around him, pulling the Canadian close, and pressing her face against his shoulder. After a moment, though she looked up and caught sight of her brother standing in the entrance to the barn, face lit up in anger, with his rifle held at the ready. Scrambling, she pushed at Matthew's shoulders, and let her eyes drop to the ground, eyes immediately looking around the floor of the barn for her pants. "Shit..."
Some place inside his mind had noticed the faint barking of a dog, but the greater part, the one concentrated on touching Amelia did not even hear the sound of it until it was too late. He heard the gunshot but at first it did not registered, he was too busy finally sucking on one of Amelia's breasts, and it was even harder to turn around and look for the source when he was pulled even closer to that warm body and shivered around him. He could have cum from that alone, he was so close, and the heat was increasing bit by bit... and just a tiny bit more, just more. And then the first push came and he jerked back confused then finally turned around like he should have done ages ago and saw the figure of a man standing in the doorway, wearing a cowboy hat that went well with the murderous expression painted all over his face. Damn... was this man Amelia's husband? Except that didn't sound right... he caught sight of the gun then and took that as his cue to stop staring and get dress, possibly run out of here. He didn't want to get shot today.
He wasted no time once they'd both looked at him. Alfred strode into the barn, seeing red, and readying his rifle to take a second shot. He couldn't believe his sister, that she would do something like this! She'd always been a bit wild, but she'd never been indecent, she'd never been one to do things like this! "Who's your friend, Amelia?" Al lifted the lantern a bit, but he didn't recognize the man, which meant he was either someone passing through, or someone working over at the railroad. Al wasn't sure which he liked less.
Amelia had managed to find her pants and pull them back on, she was shooting her brother a nasty glare, as she grabbed a handful of hay while leaning down for her hat and threw it at him. Even though Matthew was no longer pressing into her, pushing her against the wall, the heat and need were still there, making her irritable, and angry, and damn couldn't Al have taken just a few more minutes before investigating that damn dog's barking!? She pushed her hat back on her head, and pointed at him, "That ain't none your damned buisness Al!" His face turned even more red with anger, but she couldn't bring herself to care, just buttoned up her shirt and crossed her arms over her chest, giving him a stubborn glare.
He stood there watching them both, but stealing constant glances to the rifle pressed against the man's chest. He was now sure, he wasn't her husband, if he were he wouldn't be still breathing right now. A relative then... a father seemed wrong the man looked really young. Perhaps a brother then, an overprotective brother. Well he couldn't quite deny he would have been angry if he had found his won sister in a situation like this one, but Madeline was very different from Amelia. He wondered for a moment what to do, but although still weary of the other's gun he guessed the best was for him to introduce himself, maybe apologize, or at least defend Amelia. He finished dressing then walked the few steps that separated him from the man and bowed his head a tiny bit in a sign of respect. "Matthew Williams... I'm sorry we should meet in such circumstances, but let me assure you I meant your sister? no harm whatsoever."
There were days when Alfred could smack his sister for being so hardheaded and stubborn. But he'd never raised his hand to her, and even though this felt like a time that called for it more than any other he'd ever felt before, Al knew he'd still never have it in him to do it. "It is my business, when you're fuckin' him in the barn!" He snapped right back at her, and silently hating that she reminded him so much of their mother when she stood like that. It meant this was a battle he wouldn't win, he never did when she got that look on her face. More pigheaded than an angry bull, he remembered their father calling both of them.
Alfred's eyes shot to the man as he spoke. His accent spoke of the north, Alfred listened to him, but through the haze of anger he couldn't feel any sympathy, though the otherseemed to be trying to be respectful. He lifted the gun and pointed it directly at the Northerner, "No harm? NO HARM? You think that will help you here? You screw my sister, and you mean no harm?" He cocked the gun, "Just about the only way you could fix this is you marry her now."
She had a response to Alfred on the tip of her tongue when Matt moved. Amelia was so surprised by Matthew's bravery she seemed to lose her voice for a moment. She stared at him in wonder, but at Alfred's harsh remark, and mention of marriage, she felt her face go red. "WHAT!?" She liked Matthew just fine, but knew he'd likely leave as soon as the railroad was done, and the idea of getting married was not at the top of her priorities, but the look her brother gave her, she knew she was in just as much trouble as Matthew was- though stood less chance of getting shot.
Okay. So this guy was her brother, that mystery was now solved but still... it didn't help Matthew with the situation. The idea of marrying Amelia was not something he had even thought about while having sex with her a few minutes before, and it wouldn't have sounded too farfetched if it weren't for the fact that he barely knew her. Of course marriages between two people who didn't know each other was common, by default, but Matthew always thought he didn't want to follow that rule unless he had no choice, and it looked like Amelia did not want to either. As long as she wouldn't insist on them getting married, Matthew would not consider it, not even with a rifle pointed at him. He raised his hands defensively but ook another steo forward, even closer to the rifle. His face had changed into a serious, less apologetic expression, and he found himself looking up to the man's blue eyes and almost thought they mirroed Amelia's in beauty. "Look... uhm Sir. I understand you are angry, and that this is not the best situation for you or for your sister but you have to think straight please. She clearly doesn't want marriage right now, do you really want her to be unhappy?"
Alfred cocked the gun and kept it aimed as the man, Matthew, moved towards him. He couldn't help narrowing his eyes a little more. If he hadn't been so angry, he likely would have seen just how attractive the other man was, but that not something Alfred would have let himself focus on. He knew better, one didn't linger on things like that in other men, it was dangerous. He ground his teeth as the man spoke, because he knew it was true. Al would never actually force his sister to get married (Unless she was pregant, that was another matter, and it had just as much chance as the man ending up dead as married.), but even if this Northerner was right, it didn't mean Al had to give him any reason to think he wouldn't get shot. Al knew the sheriff wouldn't really forgive him for shooting, and Al didn't like the idea of firing the gun again, the horses were already moving around restlessly, and the few cows they had were as well.
Amelia couldn't help but feel a newfound respect for Matthew forming. Really, he was handling this all very well, and she was quite surprised, and even more so- very pleased. When she heard her brother cock his gun, she moved forward, moving between the two, and glaring at Alfred, as she spread her arms wide, and pressed back against Matthew, "This is just stupid, Al, stop it!" He snapped at her to get out of the way, and she glared at him, "Now, listen here, go inside, an' you can yell at me all ya like when I come in- And I'll be in in just a minute, but you really don't want to shoot anyone, do ya Al? Think of how that would go, you shoot Matthew, an' then everyone in town will want to know why, an' I can't handle the farm on my own, and with you in jail, it'd all fall apart!"
He really wished he could find the way the man looked him over amusing, he had seen that look before, mainly in women though... but the situation didn't call for him to comment on it, not now, possibly not ever. His thoughts on this were interrupted though as Amelia started moving. He wanted to stop her from putting herself in front of him, but when he raised his arm to stop her, it was too late, he watched the exchange with interest and worry, and trying to remind himself that the man... she kept calling him al, wouldn't hurt her, she was his sister after all. He listened to her words and a pang of guilt went all over his body again, he had jeopardized a lot of her life by coming here with her, it wasn't right, he thought himself he would never see her again like this without courting her properly and that he would ask the brother's permission first, that's what good gentleman did. He sighed heavily and passed a hand through his hair, before moving around Amelia and standing beside her "I'm really sorry. I won't look for Amelia without your blessing again... and we certainly won't do this without proper courting. It was insensitive of me, I was clearly not thinking."
He really hated it when his sister made sense. She only ever seemed to do it when he really wished she wouldn't. It was a habit he'd been told they shared. He knew she was right, the farm couldn't be run by just one person, and without him around the few people who did work on the farm with them would leave- they'd rather be unemployed then work for a woman. The only retort he could come up with would not have made any sense, so he was actually glad when Matthew moved. He felt a tiny bit less angry seeing the man really wasn't a coward. He'd walked up to Al on his own, and moved so that if Al did decide to shoot, Amelia wouldn't be at risk. That earned him points. Not many, but it was something. "It shouldn't have happened in the first place without courting." He growled, but lowered the rifle, "If I catch you on my land again, I'll shoot without waiting for an explination."
Amelia could have swooned over Matthew. She was annoyed at his giving into her brother, but couldn't really blame him, knowing most were not as foolhardy as herself or her brother, both of whom would stand in front of a gun and spit on the person holding it's boots if they felt so insulted. He was eloquent too, and that reminded her just why she had invited him back to the barn with her, he wasn't as dumb as the idiots around here who didn't know up from down or 'ain't' or 'paint'.
Matthew had no other choice but to accept the terms that Amelia's brother was giving him. Not ever close to his house, got it, he could do that, it was out of his way anyway. But he wasn't quite sure he could keep his promise to never see her again, he would be lying if he said he didn't want to. He ached for her, wanted to finish this sometime and then have a long conversation, get to know here even better; such a fascinating woman she was. But of course, this man didn't have to know that he was seeing her, Matthew was sure she knew perfect places where her brother would never be. "Yes Sir, It won't happen again I give you my word." He bowed slightly once again then looked to the side to Amelia, took her hand and kissed the back of it in goodbye, with a lingering promise f seeing her again. "I'm sorry Madame." And having let go of her she stepped out of the barn.
He didn't know that he'd put much stock in Matthew's word. After all, the guy's honor was rather dubious from the looks of it, however, it was all he had. He tapped his fingers on his rifles handle, and nodded at Matthew, trying not to twitch when the other took Amelia's hand and pressed a kiss to it. As far as Alfred was concerned, it was a little late for behaving like a gentleman. He watched the man leave, hold still tight on the gun, before turning his face to his sister, just in time for her to get in his face and yell at him. Glaring, he snapped right back, “What were you thinking!?” He pushed her away lightly, “We'll talk about this later. It's late.”
Amelia felt her face light up when Matthew took her hand, and prayed to God it didn't show in the light of the lantern. She gave Matthew a soft, apologetic smile, “Bye, Matthew.” She watched him leave the barn with a rather sad look. If Alfred thought this was the end of it, he was sorely mistaken, and she was ready to tell him just that too. As soon as Matthew was out of the barn, she turned furious blue eyes on her brother, and moved forward to poke him in the chest, “What was all that!?” Not detered by his response, she backed off, and gave him a nasty glare, before storming out of the barn and towards the house.
Three Days Later - Spoiler:
It was the third time she fought with Matthew this week, on Sunday it had been because Matthew had brought his rude Chinese friend to their house and the man had gotten sick over the chair, then Madeline was left alone to clean as his brother accompained the man to his house. The next one had been three days ago, Matthew hadn't been back to the house, and it was pass 12, she had been sick with worry expecting to hear the news that his brother had been killed in one of those bar fights she had heard were common around here. And today yet again, Matthew had gotten angry because Madeline wanted to buy a perfum she had liked from the only shop of in town. Matthew argued that it was too expensive and they needed to save up, but Madeline thre back at him that if there was enough money for him to go out drinking everyday then there was enough to give hereself a small treat. She paid for her perfume eagerly, it was French so in a away it gave her memories from home, too bad there was nowhere in this forsaken town where she could just seat and relax for a bit, maybe enjoy a glass of wine, they were all dirty bars with uneducated men that didn't know how to properly converse with a lady. So for now she was just wandering... or exploring, that sounded better, hoping to find something interesting to do.
For three days, Al and Amelia had done nothing but fight. He stood by what she had done was improper, which was an odd thing for Alfred to yell at anyone for; and she threw in his face that what she did was her own business. Then he pointed out it was his business, cause it could effect their farm directly. It was an endless circle, in which the screaming got louder, and at some point Amelia had thrown something at his head. Alfred had long since lost track of what all was said, and the two were taking every chance to get away from each other. Amelia had taken to spending all of her time with the horses, and Alfred had made five trips into town in the passed three days. His anger had, by now, simmered into a sort of self-hate, as he tried to figure out how to fix the situation without having to apologize- which he shouldn't have too. He was only looking out for her best interests. He was so busy trying to figure this out, that he didn't see the young woman before he'd bumped into her. The contact dragged him out of his stupor, and he wrapped his arms around the woman before she could fall, his face bright red, “I- I'm so sorry, Ma'am, I didn't see you there.”
Madeline turned to look at a colofun sign at the end of the street. It was a pharmacy with stuff no one in Canada used anymore, she honestly hoped she wouldn't get sick on her time here. It wasn't that he hated the town as much as despised it, but it had been the only option she'd had. Well one of two options, but the first one was something she rather not talk about. Matthew was moving away from their town in British Columbia, their mother was sick and their father busy with his fish company and taking care of her. He had offered Madeline two options, acompany her brother and look for a husband, or stay and marry the Ukranian boy accross the street. She liked that boy, quite a lot actually and she was ready to say yes, and take his hand and move with him his tiny farm, have a few babies and throw herself at her reading and learning of new languages. Sadly the boy had moved back to Ukraine, and although he had invited her to come with him, he knew the change would probably make her more unhappy than not, something he didn't want... he was sweet like that. She had been stuck with leaving with her brother then and although she did not resent Matthew for anything, she still took every opportunity she could to point out the problems about the town. She sighed as she turned around from the pharmacy back to where she had come from and didn't even notice the man that suddenly slammed against her. She lost her balance and the hold on her small bottle of perfume and was about to fall back to the ground when those same arms held her up while the bottle broke on the ground. She cried out and stood up, regaining her balance whe her eyes finally took in the stranger that had done it. "Can't you see where you are walking Sir! You just broke a very expensive bottle of perfume, and you are still holding me when I gave you no permission to do so."
He felt the woman getting herself straighten up, but it was hard to focus, his attention fully wrapped up in her. She was a pretty little thing, delicate looking, and so very unfamiliar. Alfred knew he'd recognize her if she were from around here, but her face was unfamiliar, though those blue-violet eyes struck something in the back of his mind, as if he knew them, but he couldn't pinpoint it. When she started speaking, he immediately snapped out of the sort of trance he'd found himself in, and pulled away a bit, holding his hands up in self defense, “I- I'm mighty sorry, Ma'am I didn't mean too... I.. Let me make it up to ya, you bought that in town, right? I'll be more than glad to pay to replace it.” He took his hat off, fidgeting with it for a moment. He gulped a bit, feeling suddenly more nervous around a woman than he had in a very long time, “I- I'm being awful rude, aren't I? My name is Alfred Jones,” He gave a low bow, then gave her a slightly anxious smile, “May I ask your name?”
This man really had no clue did he. Oh well, at least he had agreed to replace his precious perfume bottle. She sighed and looked down at the mess by her feet, it was impossible to salvage even a bit of it, oh well nothing to be done now. She looked up at the man again when he spoke once more, remembering her manners, and her cheeks flushed slightly as he gave him that tiny bow, almost no one greeted anyone like that around her. "Madeline Sir, Madeline Williams." She gave a curtsy of her own, grabbing the ends of her dress to avoid the dirt on the ground, then straighted up again. "I have to say it was rude of you to go walk like that without disregard for anyone passing by Mister Jones. But the fact that you are still here and willing to pay what you broke speaks highly of you. Thank you for not letting me fall."
Alfred was a lot of things, but he knew how to be a gentleman. His mother, who came from England, and she made sure that both her children knew how to behave in polite society (Amelia had been the bane of her exisitance, for the sheer fact that she never wanted to be a proper lady), and Alfred had become known as a bit of a charmer because of those very manners- though flirting was often lost on him, which drove a lot of the girls mad. Williams was a name he knew though, and no pretty face could make him forget it. Taking in how old she appeared, and the age Matthew had been, he could only assume they were either a couple or siblings. Cousins, maybe? He offered her a smile, putting his hat back on, “I am sorry for that, Miss Williams.” He waited a second for her to correct that, before continuing, “I ain't in the habit of just walkin' into people, I'll be more careful in the future.”
She didn't smile back when he did, but acknowledged his apology with a nod of his head and made sure to remember his name and his face just in case something like this ever happened again. Her fingers fixed the soft material of her dress and smoothed out her hair, then she turned around starting to walk back the to the store where she had bought her small bottle, and expecting him to follow behind. Her steps were smoot fluid as if she were never really touching the ground, just like her mother and her governess had taught her to do. She didn't stop or looked back until she had reached the store and then stood on the doorway until Mister Jones reached her side. "The perfume's name is Cri du coert, french with one of those new crystal bottles."
He blinked as she walked away, glancing down at the mess on the ground for a second before hurrying to catch up. She was quick for being so small, he thought. He stepped up onto the platform with her, glancing inside. Alfred had seen the outside of this particular shop many times. People passing through sometimes stopped in, and his mother used to go in every now and again. Amelia had gone in a few times, but she only wore perfume on very rare occasions, so Alfred had never been forced to accompany. He glanced inside, listening to the woman's words. French. A very pretty language, but one Alfred had never given the chance to really hear, his mother had made sure of that. “.... Kree doo kort?”
His pronunctiation was horrible and she couldn't help but laugh under her breath, she even thought it was kind of cute, but was not about to let that show so she simple shook her head. "Oh dieu ce des hommes américains. Come on, I'll come with you." She opened the door to the store and smiled sweetly at the man behind the counter. She briefly explained the problem leaving no detail out and he gave her a gentle smile before fetching another pretty white bottle for her and putting down. He repeated the same price as last time and that was her cue to turn around and look at Mister Jones, with a calm even sweet expression. Really the man could have just run off and leave her there, instead he had apologized and now was replacing her perfume, very nice man indeed. Her mother would have liked him, he would have said something like 'Madeline ces yeux bleus! Regardez ces yeux!' and then would have flirted withm him a little and point out Madeline was single... yeah it was better she wasn't here.
He blushed a little when she spoke French at him, the tone her voice made him almost feel like an idiot. He gave a bashful smile, and stepped into the shop, taking his hat off, and giving the man behind the counter. He let Miss Williams (She hadn't corrected him, so he had to assume she was Matthew's sister.) explain the situation, and tried not to blanch when the bill was rang up. He wondered if the perfumes that Amelia had bought were so expensive... Even so, he'd said he would, so he paid for it, and made a mental note to stay out of any card games, that kid from Texas always wiped him clean. So he let the man wrap the perfume up for her, and then moved to hold the door for her. As soon as she passed through, he followed, and put his hat back on, “I am very sorry, Miss Williams. If ya need anything else...”
Now that her perfume bottle was replaced and she didn't feel like she had wasted Matthew's money in vain, Madeline could breath much easier and she could feel what seemed like both guilt and relaxation coming. She was sure Mr Jones hadn't meant to run into her and make her drop the bottle and she felt kind of bad for being so rude to him. When they exited the store, he turned around and gave him the sweetest smile she could managa and reached for his hand squeezing it lightly and hoping it wasn't considered inappropiate. "I'm sorry for acting like an ogre Mister Jones, I spent a small fortune I probably shouldn't have in that perfume and I really didn't want to lose. I didn't mean to behave so rudely with you, please forgive me. I was being insensitive." She was tempted to say that as soon as she could she would repay him his money, but she couldn't bring herself to, there was really no guarantee of when she would have that kind of many available again and she didn't want to lie to him.
The smile Miss Williams gave him made Alfred's stomach do a flip, he didn't think he'd ever seen a prettier smile. His cheeks lit up in a blush as she took his hand, and he shook his head as she spoke. It was nice of her to offer to pay him back, but he'd been the one to bump into her, so it was only fair he pay her back. After all, if he'd been paying attention, it never would have happened. Bringing her hand up, he kissed the back of it, and gave her a grin, "Don't worry about it, Ma'am, it's only right. An' don't stress about it, if someone'd knocked into me the way I had you, I would'a been just as annoyed." He let her hand slip away, "I haven't seen you in town before, if it's not to much to invasive... Are ya new to the area?"
The man really was a sweet thing, maybe under other circumstances Madeline would have thought of him as even handsome, and even maybe a good prospect but she wasn't really paying attention to things like that right now. Of course deep part of her couldn't help but feel distrustful, her mother had warned her about every kind of men, the sweeter the faster they will get under your dress and the faster they would leave. She found however that she didn't mind answering his questions, not after having paid for her bottle and for treating her so nicely. "Oui Sir, We arrived only two weeks ago, my brother works on the railroad you see and well it was my parents' which that i keep him company Sir."
Two weeks. That didn't sit well in his stomach. It meant they would be there for a lot longer than Al had thought, and while he wouldn't mind Miss Williams being around, he was far less interested in her brother hanging around. Even so, he didn't mind the chance to maybe get to know Miss Williams, "Two weeks..." He wondered if Miss Williams and Amelia had met yet, it was quite possible. "Well, I hope you'll find the town to your likin'. It's small, but the people are friendly enough, I think. If you need help findin' anything, I'd be glad to help ya out."
Mister Jones didn't sound too happy about the time they had been here, maybe he didn't like strangers like some of the people here, who preferred their own held the jobs of their town as opposed to foreigners, but his expression softened too quickly and he was making another comment to her again... so maybe it wasn't that. His offer took her by surprise, she thought he wouldnt want anything to do with her after today, her cheeks flushed red and she had to look away to avoid appearing a nervous wrech. "Merci Mister~ I Thank you kindly." A small uncomfortable silence where she was supposed to say goodbye loomed over her, she bit her lip nervously and looked around the ground, catching sight of his boots and his golden spurs... he worked with horses then, she liked that. "Uhm Actually Sir, I've been looking around for a good place to drink coffee, maybe wine? Something that is not uhm... I'm sorry if I sound pretentious but, full of drunk men?"
He took a moment to think it over, before slowly nodding. The saloon was the most popular place to drink, but it was mostly the men (and his sister, who despite not supposed to be there, always weaseled her way in). He hardly noticed her staring at his feet, as he thought it over, "Have you tried the tavern?" It was a nice sized building, but most over looked it, and it was rare for people to point it out unless someone was asking for a place to stay. It really didn't draw much attention when the rodeo or 'wild west' shows weren't in town. Alfred's mother had liked it, liked to go there to drink tea, and always dragged Amelia along, though Alfred had only been inside once or twice himself. "It's not much, but... I reckon it'll fit your needs far better than the saloon, Miss Williams."
She decided to trust Mister Jones on his knowledge of the town and gave him a sweet smile. She had no time to look for the Tavern today, she had already lost too much time, there were things to be done at the house and if she wanted to finish them before Matthew got home then she had to leave now. "Thank Sir. I will make sure to take a look around there soon. And now I shall take my leave there are many things to be done at home before my brother returns. It was really nice to make your acquentaince and thank you for the perfurme again. Maybe you can join us for dinner with my brother sometime, I think you could get along well."
He kept a soft smile on his face, and congradulated himself for not twitching when she mentioned he and her brother would get along. The only thing Al wanted to do with her brother at this point was give him a black eye. Since he didn't think that would go over so well, and Alfred had always been raised to know better than to bring up such subjects in front of a lady, he nodded, took his hat off again, "It was a pleasure meeting you, Ma'am, I look forward to seeing you around town."
Two Days Later - Spoiler:
It had been a long day, their boss was sick and in bed for a week and no one had been brave enough to step up and take the leadership when their were obviously failing at completeling their work right. Matthew had stepped up in the end, but let's face it, he was't the best leader out there, and things still tumbled and many went wrong but at least everything was better, no more useless fights that slowed down the pace occured. He had sent all the men home at the end of the day and stayed behind to finish some work himself, make it easier on the boss when he came back. At the moment he was working on digging one of the holes they would be needing tomorrow to support the structure they were building, his brow was covered with sweat and his hands were dirty but hey he had seen worse.
It had taken longer than Amelia would have liked to admit to to get out of the house. As it was, Alfred had gone into town himself, making his way to the saloon, probably to sit around with that young Japanese man who was working as the town's doctor. She'd taken this opportunity to slip out the town, and make it passed the town to where the rail road was being built. It wasn't a far walk, not really, and she'd made it a few times before. Her boots hardly made any sound at all, as she walked around, careful not to step on anything or trip over the rails already made, and moved towards the sound of someone digging. Hoping that it was Matthew, and that she hadn't missed him, she grinned when she finally caught sight of him. Brushing her own hands off on her slacks, she moved closer, "You workin' alone?"
He had almost hit the exact point of deepness he wanted when sudden movement startled him. It could be one of the workers that forgot something or the other, or it could even be some random animal passing by. Matthew looked up and saw nothing, but a voice at his back made him jump and almost throw the shovel. He recognized the voice though, and memories from a few days ago came rushing back to him. He tried hard not to blush or think on how he must look like and climbed out of the hole, fixing his shirt a bit. "Yeah, loner tonight. I sent the boys home, I'm just doing some work for tomorrow"
She grinned as he climbed out of the hole, watching him pluck at his shirt. Her eyes glanced down at the hole, taking in it's depth, and arched a brow, as she looked back up at him, "If you're the boss today, why didn't you ask one of them to help? It couldn't have easy digging that all by yerself."
He shrugged and gave her a smirk, she was as beautiful as the night he had met her possibly even more so. "I didn't want them to stay more than they had to. It's okay though, this won't be a daily occurence." He grabbed the bucket with water they had brought to drink and used it to wash his hands throughoutly, trying to will away all the dirt stains.
She felt a flutter of warmth at the smirk he gave her, and hoped she wasn't blushing. Hooking her thumbs through her belt, just so she wouldn't fidget, she clucked her tongue and nodded, "For the best, can't imagine it's easy." She tilted her head a bit, and bit her lip. "I wanted to apologize, for my idiot of a brother..."
He blinked a few times, so that's why she had come. It wasn't necessary really, Matthew knew her brother had every reason to be angry at him. But for a moment he thought she might had come because she missed him. He sigued heavily and finished washing his hands before gathering his things. "I'm surprised he let you off his sight at all honestly. And no need to apologize really, he is kind of right... we shouldn't have done things that way. I'm sorry I caused you trouble with him."
She caught the disappointment, and frowned a little. She shifted a little, and offered him a smile, "He went into town a bit earlier, Al's never been good at keeping hold of me, though. Gave up on that years ago." She let go of her belt, and crossed her arms loosely over her chest, "Right or not, he still shouldn't have handled it that way..." She shifted her weight, "But... suppose, we give it another try? Doin' it the 'right way'?" She gave him a hopeful look, hoping Alfred hadn't scared him off, or that she'd somehow done so herself.
His eyes looked her over for a long while trying to read her expression and underneath it, then he simply shrugged and finished packing his things. "I don't know how happy your brother would be about me... he probably won't approve and he has ever right not to." His coat was hanging from a rock so he took it and put it on as well as his gloves then stood there regarding her quietly. "I like you, I think you are pretty and smart and you are one hell of a woman with all due respect of course. I would love to try and do this the 'right way' but... I just don't want to cause you anymore problems with your family."
She tried viciously not to fidget under his gaze, or to blush too badly under the compliments. Matthew was far more considerate then she'd thought he'd be, and right now it was more of a nuisance than a good thing. She had to respect his desire to not cause any trouble, but she liked him a lot, and hated the idea of her brother being the reason they couldn't get to know one another better. "It wouldn't, my brother will stew for a few more days, and then he won't think about it at all. It wouldn't be causing any problems for my family, I assure you." She reached out to take one of his hands, "Please? I'd hate to think we couldn't just cause we slipped up once..."
Matthew really wanted to say yes, he could imagine taking her out for an evening walk and looking as the sky turned pink then purple and finally blue. But this was very risky, he had to take care of Madeline and he couldn't risk Amelia's brother going crazy one day and driving them both out of town, he did not have the means to pay for the train back yet. But still... he never had luck when it came to romance, hookers and dancers always wanted him though, they saw him as nice someone who would be considerate not hurt them. And he was, but he knew none of them would ever love him, maybe Amelia could... "We can't hide forever Amelia, your brother would have to find out sooner or later and then he'll get mad again and probably shoot me. I have a sister I need to look after. If we are ever going to give this a chance then I need his permission."
Amelia tried not to laugh at the idea of Alfred shooting anyone. He had a temper, sure, but she couldn't see him shooting someone else, especially when it was someone Amelia liked. She would have said just that if Matthew hadn't mentioned having to ask for permission. Amelia had never been one to ask for anyone's permission, it's one of the reasons so many of the men in town were afraid of her, Amelia was hard to control, and her brother had rarely ever tried. She bit her lip, and shifted her weight a little, "I don't want to hide. And he wouldn't shoot you, at you, but not to kill." That, she knew wouldn't be reassuring, "Give him a few more days, and... I'll talk to him first, okay?" She really didn't want her brother and his temper (and her own mistake) to get in the way of something good, and she could tell just by looking at Matthew that he was something very very good.
"Of course! Take as much time as you like, adter you talk to him leave me a message here with my boss so that your brother can't tell you anything about coming to my house." There was still hesitation tinting his voice but he had nothing to lose, if Amelia said her brother wouldn't shoot him then he felt inclined to believe in her, and really it was just a chat he had to have with the man, just permission to date Amelia, that was it, no big deal. Madeline was going to be mad though, not because Matthew was finally settleing down and trying to court someone seriously, but because he hadn't told her sooner; and because she didn't know who she was yet, and because they had had sex before getting married, which she was right, but still and agry Madeline was not something Matthew liked. He finished gathering his things and put on the gloves and the coat before hesitantly leaning forward and pressing a kiss to the corner of Amelia's lips.
Amelia gave him a bright smile, and tried to ignore the panic she felt about having to actually confront Alfred over this. Even so, it was better that she do it first, before she let Matt try. Alfred would be angry either way, but she talked to him first, she hoped, she could calm him down enough to not really blow up over it. She wondered, momentarily if she could get Mr. Honda could help her write a little letter to leave for Matt once the deed was done. She wasn't the best at writing. Still thinking that over, she almost missed his leaning down to kiss her. Her face lit up, and she smiled at him. "Alright. I'll be sure to do that than." For a moment, she wondered if the reason Matt didn't want her going to his home (which she didn't know where was) was because of his sister, and not because of her brother. She had never met Matthew's sister, but she'd been mentioned a few times before.
He barely caught the doubtful look Amelia was wearing after the kiss and brushed off as consequence of what lied ahead, after all he too was nervous about telling Madeline although he suspected his sister wouldn't just grab a rifle and shoot him... but you never knew with Madeline really. He tried to give his best smile with a reasurrance tint to it and then took her by the hand slowly guiding her out of the railroad area and into the town, letting go of her just in time as people started to be visible. "You should meet my sister soon too. She won't shoot you... of that I'm sure, she'll probably want to shoot me only. But I think you two would get along." He made sure he was not watching her intently or too much or even that he wasn't too close to her, town gossip was very strong and he really did not want to start some, for his sake and his sister's and for Amelia's.
She twined her fingers with his as the walked, enjoying the feel of his hand against her own. As he spoke, she wondered how true that could possibly be. Naturally, she would have to meet his sister, that wasn't optional, she knew, but whether or not his sister would like her... Amelia was inclined to think the answer was 'no'. She rarely, if ever, got along with other women. There was just something in her manner that seemed to always bother them, the ones that did seem interest in her seemed to only like her cause she amused them. "Well, it's good ta know she won't shoot me. I would like ta meet her." When he let go over her hand, she clasped her hands behind her back, "I look forward ta it." Turning on her heel to face him, she leaned up to press a quick kiss to his cheek, not paying attention to the very few people that were lingering around, "I'll talk ta Al, and let you know when it's safe ta talk t' him, alright?"
Matthew blushed madly and his first reaction was to turn in every direction to see if people were looking at them. Thankfully nobody was, and it even made him feel a bit paranoid. He gave her his best smile and a small bow of his head, before taking her hand and kissing the back of it like it was costume. "I will wait for your word my lady, thank you for coming to talk to me today." He was being overly polite and he knew it, Amelia was not the kind of girl who went for this kind of stuff, but he couldn't help it, he couldn't take any chances. "I'll see you soon." He made a move to turn around and follow the path that lead to his isolated home in the outskirts of town, but his eyes wouldn't leave her, he watched her smile and her neck, the only part of her visible with those clothes, he thought of her body under his hands. And it occured to him that he had fallen pretty hard already. "Goodbye Amelia~"
She watched with grand amusement as Matthew looked around almost frantically. Her move had been rather scandalous, though she couldn't bring herself to care as much as she felt she should. She would have been more bothered by it, she thought, if there were more people around, or if she didn't like Matthew quite as much as she did. She smiled at his smile, though, and felt herself blush as he kissed her hand. It was true she wasn't usually the type of girl to go for all those manners- she worked hard on the ranch, her time away from the ranch was spent proving she could handle anything any man could, so being treated like a lady was not really something that happened often. With Matt, though, she felt something in her chest tighten, and something flutter in her belly, and her cheeks went as red as could be. Amelia nodded, “Good bye, Matthew.”
A Week Later(?) - Spoiler:
His palms were sweaty and so was his forehead, even though he had just washed, and put on clean clothes. He never thought meeting a man, a man his age would be this hard, but when you were touching his sister in a barn, he was bound to be scary. For the first time Matthew Williams had fear of rejection, if this man said no then his future with Madeline could be heavily compromised, he would have to steal her, but since Madeline was in his care that was impossible. Amelia had told him where the man worked, a ranch he had said on the other side of town, and he was there now, looking over the fence to the horses and waiting.
Alfred had spent the last few days feeling rather like a kicked dog. Amelia had finally confronted him about when he'd found her in the barn with that railroad worker, and had effectively dragged him out of his thoughts of a rather pretty young lady he'd had to buy perfume. Alfred and Amelia had fought about the subject long into the night, and he had been cornered into letting her have his way. Between her sharp tongue, and the fact that she was generally right, he found he had no choice but to back down. However, this was one of those times he had to wonder if he'd been too lenient on his sister. Things had been hard when they'd lost their parents and were suddenly on their own with the ranch, even with help from everyone in town, his sister had never really had someone to tell her what to do, and Alfred had never felt it was really his place- long as she wasn't getting herself or anyone else hurt.
She had made him swear to God that he would get to know Matthew before immediately shooting him down. Alfred, thinking he'd rather just shoot the man for having been so ill mannered as to jump straight to sex, had reluctantly agreed. With the promise that he would never catch them like that again, and that should it come to marriage, which he hoped it wouldn't, he would have a say in the end.
Amelia had said Matthew would come to talk to him, and Alfred had been hoping it take a little longer for the other to work up the nerve. She told him Matthew had a sister of his own, so he did understand and was the one that had pressed for it. After a morning of working out in one of the pastures, Alfred stood up from where he was kneeling next to one of the posts in the fence, trying to fix it, and finally noticed the man from before. Patting his hands on his trousers to try and get some of the dirt off of them, he walked along the fence, his tool bag slung over his shoulder almost casually. “I was wonderin' when ya'd be showin' up.” He said, voice guarded, but mostly sounding bored.
Matthew could say this was the most terrifying moment of his life. He saw the man dropping whatever he was doing and move towards him, and for a second he considered running, before the other could get close enough that he would catch him. But he was no coward, well not a big one at least, and if he really wanted to be with Amelia then he needed to prove it here and now, this was his test. Besides this was the last ste, the last obstacle; he had already told Madeline about it, as predicted she had been angry, more than that, had even thrown him a vase he had to catch before it could break on his face, he didn't like that he had gone and had sex with her like that, and in her house. Matthew had to give her that point. But Madeline had warmed up to the idea when Matthew thought about courting her and maybe one day marrying her. Her name was Amelia, and she was like no other girl Matthew had ever met, this made Madeline somhow happy.Taking a deep breath, he fought to give the other a warm smile and a polite look then bowed his head a bit in sign of respect, before adressing him. "Sorry to interrupt your work Mr. Jones. Miss Amelia told me I could come see you sometime this week. And today my work was dismiss earlier, I thought I would drop by and see if you are not very busy, and if you are maybe we could arrange a later meeting, wherever you decide."
Alfred turned his head to glance back at the fence he'd been working on. It wasn't finished, and he did hate leaving things like that, but the horses seemed rather lazy right now, they were all grazing, and only one or two lingered near the fence, none near where he'd been. This was something that needed to be done, so he figured a short break would be good. He looked the other up and down a bit, seeing much of what he'd seen before when they'd first cross paths, though this time there was less panic and clothes thrown on haphazardly. The man was handsome, couldn't be much older or younger than Alfred himself. "Now is fine." He crossed his arms over his chest and watched him a bit uncertainly. The way he'd said Amelia's name had at least shown the man had good manners when he wasn't faced with a gun.
He thought about how he wanted to start, well he could start by asking persmission, after all that is whay he came for, but that would been a rather blunt move, and he couldn't affor to make mistakes. No, an apology was in order as the very first thing he needed to do. His lowered eyes rose up slowly until they locked with the blue ones (just like Amelia's) that the man in front of him had and then with a polite whisper, loud enough for the man to hear, he started speaking. "I'm sure Miss Amelia has already summarized my intentions Sir, but I knew it was better to tell you upfront, without her interceding for me. The events we met in were the product of my stupidity, a mistake, and i regreat doing it ever since. But the truth is Sir that I care for your sister, that if I only did what you saw back there at your home, was because I thought of her as a fascinating beautiful woman. I'm not excusing my behaviour, far from it. I'm well aware I should not have done what I did, and I swear under God it won't happen again. "
The other's voice was so quiet Alfred was sure if there'd been any noise, so much as the wind rustling the trees, he wouldn't have heard the man's words at all. They were polite, but quiet, and Alfred almost took them for being timid. He listened though, with his mouth shut in a firm line. His stance never shifted, didn't loosen. He could believe some of it. He could tell the man before did feel regret for how things had gone, and Alfred knew that Amelia could be overwhelming at the best of times, even to people who knew her and were used to her. Tilting hish ead a little, he nodded, "A'ight, then why don't ya tell me what yer intentions are? My sister is a handful, but I know her well enough to know she can take care o' herself." Which was as close to saying, "I know it wasn't completely your fault." as Alfred was willing to get. "If ya plan ta just woo her, an' then leave, I can tell ya now, it won't be me ya'll have to be afraid of."

| Matthew didn't have to think twice to believe what Alfred was telling him about Amelia. He could already see the woman was not something to be toyed with, even if he would do something like that, but he was a gentleman and his intentions were serious. He really did like Amelia, she was a free spirit not like every other lady she had encountered, they were all worried about the gossip and the high society and what style of dress was more fashionable. Matthew couldn't care about those things and he didn't, and to find someone as beautiful as Amelia who didn't care about half of those either had been a blessing.
"I plan to court her Sir, I want your sister to love me as much as I'm beginning to love her. Maybe one day ask her to marry me. And I would very much like your blessing if you are willing to give it away to someone like me." He bowed low to show his respect, but couldn't help the nervousness that crept up his back and made his palms sweaty. "I promise to be the best I can be for Amelia Sir. I am not rich, but I come from a good Christian family and I have more than enough to support us both."

| He still had his reservations about this. The slight to his family, by Matthew, was rather big, even if Amelia had been just as much to blame as the Canadian. But Amelia was fit to kill him if he didn't give Matthew this chance. Still, the last thing Al really wanted was to give his blessing to something like this. A good family or not, Matthew was a railroad worker, meaning he'd likely leave when the railroad was complete, find work somewhere else, and Amelia would probably follow him. The idea of his sister leaving, the only family Alfred had left, hurt. He couldn't run the ranch alone, and even though he was getting to the age where he was expected to settle down himself, he was afraid of being alone in that house, with his sister gone to possibly never be seen or heard from again.
"When the railroad is done, what do you plan to do?" It wasn't what he should have asked. In fact, according to Amelia, Alfred shouldn't be asking anything. he should be automatically giving Matthew his best wishes on his plans to woo her. But this needed to be known before hand, he had to know what the plan was. Had to know just what all he was giving up before he let this man steal his only family from him. To be fair, and hopefully settle at least a few of the other's obvious worries, he added, "I need to know, before I can give anythan'."

| It wasn't what he was expecting to hear. He had hoped for an approval and a few warnings, or in the worse case scenario a complete refusal that he would have to work around with. But he hadn't expected any talk about his future or about anything really. This man seemed angry enough to not want to make small talk with the enemy. Still, now that the question was asked he had to answer... he thought about lying first but this man seemed to really care about his sister and he deserved the truth.
"I don't know. I honestly have no idea. I took this job because things back home were... not good. My father wanted to marry off my sister and wanted to give me job in a mine. Miners don't live long, so I found a job and I took my sister with me so she could escape that. And here we are, trying our luck but we don't have a settle future Sir. I guess what you wanted to hear is that I do, that I know exactly what I'm doing of this life god sent me, but truth is I don't, I just hope Amelia can be by my side when it comes time to figure it out."

| It wasn't the answer he really wanted, but then... nothing would have made him happy, short of hearing that Matthew had not planned to leave to go anywhere. And he'd known that wasn't going to be the answer. If nothing else, Alfred supposed this answer was adequate. He knew that miners lives were harder then most, and Matthew had done what he'd needed to get away from being that, and had apparently protected his sister from being married off as well. Alfred could appreciate a hard worker, and someone who cared about their family, it meant more then 'being from a good Christian family' or whether or not someone was rich.
Taking a few long minutes to mull over what Matthew had said, as well as to take a bit of pleasure in knowing Matthew was waiting for the answer. Reminding himself that no one in this town could give him an answer he liked, and Amelia's eyes were set on the man in front of him, there would be no way she would ever happily settle with anyone else unless she tried with Matthew, and it had to be by the Canadian's decision that Al's blessing was needed for it to happen at all. She'd be hell to live with if he said no now. So, Alfred held his hand out for Matthew to shake, "Alright then. Ya have my blessin'."
"Just keep in mind, ya hurt her, an' they won't find yer body." Al gave him a toothy grin, "There's all sorts o' places ta hide a body out here. An' I know them all." He was mostly joking, but only mostly.

| He didn't know whether Alfred was telling the truth or not but he sure as hell wouldn't find out anytime soon. He gave a wary smile and a small nod of acknowledgment and shook the man's hand firmly.
"Understood Sir, I promise you won't have to dirty your hands burying my body anywhere. I'll take care of her, with my life if needed be. Thank you so much for the opportunity." He should have said his goodbyes and leave, but an idea scratched him at the back of his mind and he couldn't stop himself from voicing it. "Uhm, Sir. I have yet to tell my sister about any of this but I, I would like her to meet you both. And I would like Amelia to start talking to her... my sister she, she doesn't make friends easily Sir. So I was wondering if you would join us for dinner, maybe in a week or two? I promise she cooks the most delicious bacon in the face of the planet." Matthew dared a shy smile then and looked up at the man's face.

| Matthew's grip was good, and Al rewarded his wary smile with a bright one. He was still unsure of Matthew, but at this point, there would be no good to come from scaring him further. Especially seeing how he seemed to understand that. Long as he knew Al took this all very seriously, there shouldn't be any trouble. He gave a short nod, and a gruff, "See that you do." to Matthew's promise to take care of Amelia. Alfred intended to hold the man to that, and wouldn't let him forget it, at any point in time. Though he'd do Matthew a favor and not mention that it had been made at all to Amelia. Al didn't know if she'd swoon or be annoyed, but he didn't want to see her swoon and Amelia annoyed was a bad thing to anyone in her vacinity.
He was thrown off by the invitation though. Alfred had assumed that with permission, Matthew would high tail it, like anyone else owuld have. Not hung around to invite Alfred and Amelia both to meet his sister. He wasn't too sure of how that would go over. Not that Alfred had a problem with meeting Matthew's sister, it would give him an idea of what Amelia was getting into, but... well, if Matthew was hoping Amelia would be a good friend to his sister, Al wasn't so sure how well Matthew knew Amelia yet. She'd never been good at working with other women. "I, and I'm sure Amelia, would enjoy that. It would be a pleasure to have dinner with ya both, just let Amelia know when you decide when."
With that, Al wasn't sure what else could be said between them. This experiance had been awkward, and strange on both their parts, and he was ready for a break. So, glad that he had an excuse to end the whole affair, Alfred offered another, slightly strained smile, "It was good talkin' to ya, Matthew, I'm glad you had the guts to do so. But, I hafta get back ta work, before one o' the horses makes a run for it."
