He sat on the bench, whole body hunched over, arms resting on his knees, head bowed. His breathing was slow, deep, and done more out of habit than actual need. In the past few weeks he'd found that he didn't really need to breathe, unless he wanted to speak. However, people tended to notice when one stopped breathing and didn't start again until they wanted to talk. Add that he was still new, he was pretty sure the term was 'fledgling', and breathing was just more comfortable.

He kept his eyes closed, listening to sound of cars in the distance, trying to seek out the sound of anyone foolish enough to be out so late. He'd used this park once before, caught a jogger, and made a quick meal of him. The police had combed the grounds, while he made his way to another park.

Clubs were good too, useful in picking out prey, but not suited to him. He was still too sloppy. Getting the attention of his prey was easy, they were drawn to him, but holding them in that trance while he fed, was still so hard, and since he only ate when he thought he could hold the trance..... He hadn't eaten in a while.

His throat burned, stomach ached and grumbled at him angrily. His body twitched, similar to the way a drug addicts would when in need of a hit. He hated that most. Looking like a drug addict, as if his natural albinoism hadn't been enough to draw unwanted attention to his awesome self.

Arthur Kirkland strolled through the grass of the public park, the dew glistening on his shoes whenever they caught the streetlight. He was on a mission for ingredients for his potions, and he knew of several useful plants which grew wild in this park. The bag at his waist was already mostly filled with mushrooms, leaves, and roots.

The slight breeze caught his cape, fluttering it out behind him. He lowered his hood, allowing the wind to catch his hair and to feel the glory of the darkness. It was a beautiful night, indeed.

He was ready to make his way home, stepping lightly from the grass to the paved walkway. This late at night, he had the park to himself, save for one other. He saw him, on a bench up ahead, with his white hair and pale skin, hunched over and shaking. Anyone else would have thought he was your typical street urchin, a bleached punk strung out for another fix. Arthur knew better. His abilities as a magician enabled him to detect certain supernatural forces. This man wasn’t even truly alive.

And that made him interesting.

Curious, he strolled closer, a hand on his wand in case this creature decided to make an annoyance out of himself.

He heard the approach of another person. A living, breathing person, who's pulse echoed in his head like music in a club. That thump-thump-thump of a heart beat, that made his fingers itch, and his fangs tingle. He drew in a sharp breath, taking in the scent. He couldn't recgonize some of it. Scents that were unfamiliar to someone who'd spent the majority of his life as a normal mortal, and still hadn't spent any time with the supernatural, even after becoming one, himself.

Underlying the sweet and sour scents of things he couldn't name, there was the smell of human. It was off, somehow darker than the scent of other mortals. He decided this was probably because this person obviously wasn't running. He usually fed on those who had been active, joggers, people at clubs dancing and drinking. They were sweaty, moving on self-induced adrenaline.

This person was walking up the walkway. Calmly. Slowly.

Thump-Thump-Thump

His breathing slowed to near non-exisitant. His mouth seemed dryer than before, tongue sticking to the top of his mouth. He swallowed air, trying to force himself to calm. Eyes opened, staring at the ground, but not really seeing it, as his vision blurred and sharpened sporraticly.

Thump-Thump-Thump

The fingers of one hand tapped along with that beat, on the back of his other. His body tensed and relaxed, shifting slightly to be ready to move, though he didn't need too.

His mouth opened to take in a gulp of the air, tasting the night. The moistness in the air, the smog of the city. The complexitity of the man approaching. His tongue peeked out of his mouth to lick along his lips, running over his sharp fangs in the process.

Thump-Thump-Thump

Once the sound of the heart beat, the footsteps, were close enough, he pushed off of the bench. His movements smooth and practiced. He didn't turn to face the man, just stood there, shoving his hands in his pockets, as though to warm them up.

It took him only a moment of concentration. Even as he felt his desire for blood overwhelm the part of him that said to at least take the man off of the path and away from the artificial light. Steadying his still twitching body as much as he could, soothing the roar in his ears with the promise of blood, he moved.

A normal human wouldn't have been able to spot him, as he moved from where he stood by the bench, swathed in false light, into the shadows and off to the side. None of the joggers ever did. He came from the side, darting forward, eyes bright in the darkness, one arm stretched out, reaching for where he guessed the man's throat was.

Oh this had to be a young one, newly turned and so naïve. The older undead would have recognized the smell of magic and would have thought twice about such a bold move, no matter how hungry they were. He’d met vampires before in his travels. They were a peculiar breed, indeed. Of course, the ones he’d met had been ancient and wise. That was because the foolish ones didn’t survive long.

Even his eyes couldn’t catch the speed with which the vampire moved, couldn’t follow him in the darkness. But he could feel him. He could sense his approach.

His wand came out and with a flash and a bang, he hit his pale attacker in the chest with a spell forceful enough to knock him onto his back. He kept his gaze on the man, his irritation showing, as he swung his arm out, the wand at the end glowing and growing and taking on the shape of a sword which gleamed with the streetlights. He pointed the blade at the prostrate man’s chest.

“It’s no wooden stake, but cutting your heart from your chest would get the job done just as well”

He could tell the man wasn’t ready to give up. He still had a lot of pride in him. But he was desperate and he was weakened and above all else, he was hungry. He could tell by the way he shook and the slight gauntness to his appearance. It wasn’t even close to a fair match. There would be no satisfaction in it.

“I highly recommend staying right where you are. I would derive no pleasure from killing you, but I will if you make a nuisance of yourself.”

He didn't know what had hit him, but it threw his whole body, and he nearly bounced on the ground. Head making sharp contact with concrete, knocking him out of his stupor, and bringing spots to his vision. Trying to blink the spots away, his eyes strained to make out the man he'd attacked. It took a moment, but he could see him clearly enough now.

He wasn't tall, and with his long cloak, all Gilbert could really make out, was the arm that held the sword, and his face. Tawny hair fell over a pale face, with the brightest green eyes, he'd ever seen, but were over cast with what were also the bushiest brows he'd ever seen.

If the man hadn't had the clear intent to cut his heart out, and his throat didn't hurt so badly from his thirst, he'd have laughed. As it was, all he could manage was a half-threatening growl, that made his throat ache. His lips pulled back in a snarl, showing off his fangs, but didn't move from the ground.

He'd never dealt with magic before, and, while still unsure that was actually what hit him, he wasn't willing to take his chances and see what else the man could do. He scrambled back on the ground, not standing, but putting some distance between them.

As he moved, his body picked up the rhythm of breathing it would have had before, taking in air and letting it out in quick succession. He struggled to get his legs under him, and stayed low to the ground, crouching, eyes dark with hunger, watching the man with a new sense of fear. His mind rushed to try and decide if he could make a run for it, but he wasn't sure, seeing as the man had been able to attack him.

"Wha...." The half word came out strangled, and hoarse. He hated that. That sound in his voice that had never been there before, that desperate husky sound. "What the fuck are you?"

The half-hearted growl and the display of fangs failed to intimidate the wizard. He had been in the supernatural world all his life, seen all manner of creature and every branch of magic. His threshold for fear had been set to a point that this meager bloodsucker could not hope to reach in his current state.

“I am a sorcerer,” he said, thinking that should have been obvious at this point. “And you are an infant vampire.” This being was so obviously clueless it bordered on being sad. He scuttled away, trying to distance himself and not even realizing the futility of that. Now that he was closer and not moving at an unnatural speed, Arthur was able to take in his appearance. The fact that he was undead was not where his interesting qualities ended. Despite his white hair, he was young in appearance, those wide red eyes of his telling of his rare genetic abnormality. Quite unique. Even alive and mortal, he would have been an interesting specimen.

He was still bothersome, though. Arthur didn’t like sparing those who had disrespected him. And trying to eat him was the ultimate in disrespect. Still, this wasn’t even sporting. It would be like killing a baby chick in the nest, pointless and needlessly wasteful. He lowered his sword, keeping it at the ready, but no longer brandishing it threateningly.

Arthur frowned, narrowing his eyes. “You are quite the fool to attack me. Did your maker teach you nothing?”

His breathing slowed, jaw clenched, as he tried to wrap his mind around the word 'sorcerer'. Before, the only people he'd known that would call them such were actors in fantasy movies, or D&D geeks. As it were, he had a feeling laughing now could very well lead to his death.. well, his true death.

His eyes followed the sword closely, as it was lowered, still seeing it as the most dangerous threat at the moment. He didn't relax, and slowly, carefully, continued to move back, body tense, incase he'd have to dart forward, or to the side, to get away.

He didn't catch the infant comment, but he did hear, and take offense to being called a fool. Gilbert had been called a lot of things in his life, and the ones that bothered him the most, were the ones that questioned his intelligence. He'd pounded people into the ground for such comments before. He had the impulse to do so now, but when his eyes turned to lock on the 'sorcerer's', he decided to let it slide.

The mention of his maker struck a nerve, more so than the fool comment. His maker, he did remember, vaguely. He was pretty sure he'd been drunk, either on the music and dancing, or actual liquor, he couldn't be sure. She'd drawn him away from the crowd, lured him out to an alley and turned him, only to leave him there, in the dark, alone, and vulnerable. Utterly and completely alone, uninformed of anything, and not knowing what he was, or what to do.

That wound, the emotions still attached to that memory were raw, and painful. Moreso than his aching throat, or churning stomach. "Tch. She ditched, didn't stick around to teach anything."

He had more to say on the matter. Curses, and insults to be thrown towards the one that had ended his life, and left him like this. However, his throat wouldn't allow them to be voiced with the full venom of his hatred, and he doubted the magic-user before him would care to listen.

Arthur kept his eyes on the fledgling vamp, following his movements as he continued to inch away. It was something one did not see every day – a member of a powerful class of being crawling along the earth, quite clearly in fear of its life. Yet he still managed a scowl and look of offense at the wizard’s words. This encounter was no doubt a near-fatal wound to his pride.

He was able to pick up now on the German accent and the youthful attitude the more the man spoke, but the content of his words stood out. Abandoned. The vampire didn’t use that word, but that was what the wizard’s mind latched on to. If this man had been made into what he was and then thrust out into the world to sink or swim, well, it was no wonder he was so inept. He was being driven by pure instinct. Though he had only met previous vampires in passing, he had studied the topic in his training. As he understood it, the bond between a member of the undead and his maker was supposed to be a strong one. To have that severed so abruptly… He was practically a babe in the woods. One with a pair of fangs and the drive to kill.

Abandonment had a tendency to strike a chord with Arthur. He knew the suffering it caused well. He felt a surge of…what was it? Pity? Sympathy? It was not a feeling he had experienced often since turning his back on the world at large and embracing a darker path, rejecting others as he had been rejected.

He stared at the man on the ground, contemplating his next move. His logic said he should either send the vampire away to meet his fate elsewhere or go ahead and kill him now and be done with it. But something - probably that strange feeling of empathy and the general curiosity surrounding the man – compelled him to go the illogical route.

“I am Arthur Kirkland. What do you go by?”

He watched the man closely, catching the shifting emotions, hating what he thought might have been pity. Rising a bit, still partially crouched, ready to drop back to the ground if the magician seemed threatened, he kept his body ready. Legs shaking slightly with the strain, black and red seeping into his vision from his hunger, that was growing worse by the second. He needed to feed, soon, quickly.

"Gilbert." He managed to choke out, his throat viciously protesting the action by clenching and closing. If he actually needed to breathe, it would have been a problem. As it was, it was only a mild nuisance, and left him feeling even more uncomfortable in his current predicament. His pride demanded he do something to heal the beating it was taking, his fear pushed for him to flee, his hunger to attack.

His eyes scanned the area around him, darting back to Arthur every few seconds, as he tried to judge the distance and his chances. If he ran, would the man follow him? If he stayed, he had a feeling he would die, but if he could turn this some how, he could stroke his wounded ego, and get a meal. It was to late to worry much about keeping things clean, or neat, leaving just a body, not a major crime scene with blood wasted on the ground, or signs of a fight.

Shifting his weight, he fought with himself. Angered by the part of him, that human side, filled with logic and conscience that he had ignored so much in his mortal life, told him to not be stupid. To run now, and live a little longer, if what he was doing could be considered living, that is.

“Well, Gilbert, you should know this is my territory and I can’t have you attracting a lot of attention and stirring up trouble. Corpses piling up would pose a problem for me. Not that it seems you’ve been all that successful in your hunting…” The creature’s hunger was becoming more apparent. He could barely choke out any words and he shook under even the slightest movement. “You are nearly starved.”

He knew his next words were foolish before he even said them. “Come with me. My place is shielded from the sun and I may be able to teach you a few things.” Arthur knew this was a bad idea and could prove disastrous in a dozen different ways. A young and impulsive vampire was a liability no matter how one looked at it. Yet he was propelled forward by that nagging sense of, dare he think it, compassion? No, that wasn’t quite it. He had simply taken an interest in the young vampire. He was a project. Something to occupy his time. How often does one come across such a thing as a completely naïve predator?

The night was wearing on. It would be a night wasted if he lingered here much longer. His potion called for a full moon and he did not feel inclined to wait for the next one. He stared down at the vampire, sensing the hesitation, and frankly Arthur couldn’t blame him. But he had made up his mind to do this and he meant to proceed. Seeing the man’s….Gilbert’s…continued shivers, Arthur came to the realization that they would not get far like this. He sighed heavily, realizing the only way for this to proceed as he planned.

“I suppose you’re mostly useless as you are. You probably could not even walk the distance in this state.” Slowly, he lifted the sword, bringing it to his wrist. With a quick slash and a brief wince at the pain, he opened the flesh. Hot blood immediately began to flow, dripping down his arm in a steady rivulet.

“Drink of me. If you don’t stop when I order you to, I will kill you without hesitation. You won’t get a second warning…”

He had to struggle to stay focused on the words being spoken. He hadn't been aware there were set 'territories' and if he'd been able to speak, he would have pointed out that he was damned careful about not leaving a mess. Hell, it was half the reason he was so fucking hungry now! Needless to say, the comment about his being starved was pointless, because it was frighteningly obvious.

He was completely thrown when the man offered him a place to stay, at least for the day. He'd been sneaking into basements and abandoned buildings to avoid the sun. He hadn't been home in what felt like ages, but couldn't have been more than two months. He didn't know if he could really trust this guy, but the idea of sleeping somewhere other than a damp basement, or cold empty building was enough to entice him.

He watched, as Arthur lifted the sword, taking a step back, worried that the man had changed his mind and planned to attack. His eyes, dark as they were, grew wide with shock when the blade cut through skin. The smell of blood, hot and metallic, filled the air, his throat opened up in anticipation, and he moved closer slowly, still hesitant. A loud sound echoed in his mind, like waves against a shore, it morphed, as he moved closer, to that of a heart beat. Drowning how his thoughts, and urging him forward.

He did hear the warning, of course. Though it was muffled from the sound of Arthur's heart beat, the smell of his blood as it dripped. Gilbert tried to wrap his mind around it, and force himself to remember it. He stumbled and nearly fell, as he moved towards the Sorcerer, eyes locked on the free flowing blood. He nearly fell a second time when he reached the man, pausing long enough to look up, expecting to be struck with the sword. Seeing no threatening movements, he took the bleeding arm in his hands, and pressed his open mouth to the wound.

The taste of blood was odd at first, different from the blood of anyone else he'd taken from. Somehow, sweeter, tangier, with an underlying flavor he couldn't name, but left a fuzzy feeling on his tongue and lips, like novacaine. The blood slid down his throat easily, as he lapped and sucked, teeth scrapping skin once. His eyes closed, against his will, as warmth filled him, wrapping around him, clearing the haze from his mind. His grip tightened, eyes opening partially, as his previous shaking subsided, and some color returned to his cheeks. The roaring in his ears faded to a dull thrumming sound.

Arthur watched with interest as the vampire approached him, those red eyes focused solely on the blood that trickled from his wrist. He kept his expression blank looking on as if watching an everyday occurrence which was mundane but still required monitoring. Gilbert was still cautious, still hesitant, which meant that he wasn’t a complete idiot. But the blood drew him irresistibly in, like a moth to a flame.

He hoped his warning had made it pass that driving hunger and had taken hold within the vampire’s mind. He tightened his grip on his sword in case of its need.

Gilbert stumbled clumsily closer and Arthur had to resist the urge to roll his eyes at the desperation. This man was all instinct and no dignity at the moment. A more experienced member of the undead would have questioned the wizard’s motivation. One does not typically open their veins for the sake of charity. But Gilbert didn’t question it, not out loud at least. He gave one glance away from the blood and Arthur merely stared back at him coldly, saying nothing. And then he felt the touch of lips against his wounded wrist.

He wasn’t sure what to expect from this feeding; he had never done such a thing as this before. It was an odd sensation… The pain of the wound renewed every time the teeth scraped him and he could not help but flinch. He felt the hands, cold as stone around his arm, yet the tongue was warm as it ran over him. The sucking was the hardest to adapt to. It was a conflict of the senses…it felt wrong and dangerous and at the same time it was…exciting. He felt like he was being drained and seduced simultaneously.

He felt a slight dizziness start to set in. He was getting lightheaded and a faint nausea settled in his stomach. He was a sorcerer, yes, but he was still mostly human and could only take so much blood loss before feeling the effects. He blinked, groaning slightly as he tried to clear his head and remain focused on the killer beside him.

“Enough. Stop now.”

He heard the order, though he was hesitant to follow it. He nearly didn't, it would be so easily to bite in, and take more. However, the image of that sword flashed in his mind, and he wasn't willing to find out just how skilled the man next to him was with it. So, carefully, he released his hold on Arthur's arm, and pulled his mouth away, licking at his lips. He moved a few steps away, out of immediate striking range, while he wiped at his the left corner of his mouth and his chin, where a line of blood had spilled. Sucking his thumb into his mouth, he licked the blood away.

He wasn't full, but he could think again, had a sense of control. He'd be fine for the rest of the night and the coming day. He'd be well enough the next night to find better hunting grounds.

His eyes, now bright and vivid red, turned back to the Sorcerer, watching him. Under normal circumstances, he knew, it would be considered polite to thank someone. He wasn't sure the act of letting someone drink your blood fell under normal circumstances, but he did know that helping someone who was starving did. He hated thanking people for things, hated having to admit he'd needed help.

Finally, forcing the side of him that demanded he not stoop so low as to admit his weakness away, he cleared his throat, and blinked twice, before managing to get out a "Thanks..."

Arthur had not been expecting the word of gratitude and was not sure how to respond to it. He had not been thanked for anything in some time, but he had not done much deserving of it either. Rather than struggle for the appropriate words (“You’re welcome” seemed inappropriate for the situation) he merely gave a low hum of acknowledgment. It was an awkward moment for both of them.

He was still bleeding, and for multiple reasons that could not be allowed to continue. He doubted highly the vampire was completely sated by the meager meal and his own health demanded he stem the flow. Keeping a close eye on Gilbert lest he should decide to try his attack again now that he was no longer starving, Arthur extended his sword out to his side where it shined with its own radiance and shrank down to its previous, more manageable form. “Don’t harbor the delusion that it is any less deadly in this shape,” he warned, making contact with those astonishingly red eyes.

Placing the wand in his injured hand (which would have had a much more difficult time with the sword), he covered the wound with his palm. One who didn’t know better would have thought he was just applying pressure as one would normally do to treat a bleed. However that was not his method. He whispered some words under his breath that were strange, exotic, and powerful. Words of a long dead tongue, himself and other magic-users like him being among the few who still knew of them. A faint golden glow issued from under his hand, standing out eerily in the darkness of the night. Gradually it faded and Arthur’s spell fell to silence. He removed his hand, revealing the neat, mostly healed cut below. Magic lingered in it, he could feel it. In a few days it would be like the wound was never there. He couldn’t heal his blood loss this way though. The magic coursing through his veins naturally sped up his healing, but it took time. A potion could hasten the recovery, but as he did not know he would be feeding a stray vampire tonight, he had not brought any with him. He would just have to manage until he made it home.

He turned his attention fully to Gilbert once again. “I don’t intend to loiter in this park all night. If you wish to end this encounter now, then I want you far from my domain – I will not be as generous the next time I see you here…. However, if you would like to learn of what your maker failed to teach you, I suggest you come with me.” With that statement, he turned in the direction of his home, cloak billowing out behind him as he set forth.

He watched the sorcerer carefully. His eyes widening at the glow of magic, and the transfiguration of the sword. Watching that deadly weapon, that had been aimed at him, turn into a small wand, was... well. Odd, and almost comical. It was also much harder to take that piece of wood seriously. However, having seen it in it's other shape, he figured it would be wise to take the man's advice, and not risk having it turned on him.

It felt very odd, to taking his own well-being into consideration. In fact, it was rather annoying. He wasn't used to it, and he didn't much like it. Things were easier, back when he was human, and things could be taken at face value. When a man in a cloak walking in the park was just a weirdo or enthusiastic D&D/Harry Potter fan, not a real magic user. Pieces of wood remained that, they didn't turn into killer swords that could cut out ones heart.

More importantly, girls in clubs were looking for dancing and maybe sex. Not someone to feed on and turn into an undead creature who fed on blood.

The feeling of magic, he assumed that's what changed the sword/wand's shape, and healed the man's bleeding arm, was familiar now. It hung in the air, sweet and deceptive. He could taste it when he breathed through his mouth. He recgonized it as one of the things he hadn't been able to name when he was feeding.

He watched the Sorcerer walk away from him for a few seconds. Weighing his options. He was more than capable of finding a place to sleep when day came. Finding a new place to hunt would be harder to do, he didn't know how far Arthur's territory was, surely more than just the park.

It was the desire to know more, that caused him to follow after the man. He wasn't usually the type to seek out knowledge, preferring to just go with his gut instinct. He was in the dark on this one, though, and if there were things out there that could do what Arthur had, he couldn't count of getting lucky twice. He wasn't that stupid, and he had every intention of getting himself under control, better at everything he had become and blending, before hopefully, at some point, being able to go home.

"There a lot of 'Sorcerers' in the city?" His voice was back to normal, he noted.

He could sense the vampire hesitating behind him before falling in step. It seemed he had decided to take the offer. Arthur did not have guests at his house often and it was even rarer for it to be a stranger to which he owed nothing. He was still somewhat puzzled by his own actions, denying to himself that he felt any sense of sympathy or connection with this creature. He justified his actions by insisting to himself that this was just a break from the monotony of his day to day life. His time was spent perfecting his skills, building his knowledge, influencing various factors so that they better suited his purposes. But there was very little interaction involved with any of that. Since his sons had left him...And the fae he used to convert with rejected him as well since he had taken the dark turn… Even his conjurations were little more than intimidating pets when not in battle.

If he were completely honest with himself, he would have recognized his own loneliness. But he was rarely honest with anyone anymore, let alone himself. He would not admit that he craved human contact, even if this new acquaintance wasn’t exactly human. Somewhere deep within, he was pleased by the result of the night’s events.

His home was over a mile away on the outskirts of the city, and in his current anemic state his pace was somewhat slowed. And then the vampire started to speak. Was this a legitimate attempt at learning more or just idle chitchat to break the silence? Arthur was so out of practice he could hardly tell, but he was getting a headache regardless. Of course, that could have been the anemia as well…

“There are not many sorcerers, period,” he answered with somewhat of an irritable tone. “True magic users are rare this day and age and one’s who are human are even rarer. In addition, we are somewhat territorial, as you may have noticed.”

He kept up with the slow pace the sorceror had set. Hands shoved into his jean pockets, taking shorter steps than he normally would. Some part of him, probably the human part of him that was pretty rare in showing itself, told him he should feel guilty, after all, he was the reason the man next to him was now so pale. That was the same part of him that had been trying to grab his attention since he had become this bloodthirsty creature that he was, but it had failed so far. He wasn't much interested in letting it have it's way now.

"Guess that's why you don't hear about them on the morning news." He snickered, glancing at Arthur through the corner of his eye. Watching the man carefully. Even though he hadn't taken enough to fill himself, he knew he'd taken a lot, and it was showing on the man's face. He felt no guilt over the blood taken, but he was hoping that the Sorceror wouldn't pass out before getting wherever they were going.

Partially, he wondered what this man's limits were. Chances are, they weren't as far off as some peoples. From the tone Arthur's voice had taken, it was obvious they weren't far tonight. Normally, he would push his luck, it was a special skill of his. However, the sorceror had offered to help him, had already done so once. So, none of the tricks he wanted to play, instead, he would bite his tongue and play nice... ish.

"How far away is your home?" He asked, moving ahead a bit, and turning to walk backwards, watching carefully. "I don't really care how far it is," He added, "You look like you're going to pass out though. If you do, I'll need to know where to take you."

That sounded far to much like an offer of help, for his tastes. It left an odd taste in his mouth, and he nearly retracted the words. He had a smart ass comment to make, to make up for those mispoken words, but held it back, reminding himself he owed the guy, and that he didn't much fancy meeting that sword again.

He glared coldly at the vampire, narrowing his eyes in high annoyance. He didn't appreciate the implication of weakness (or at least what he interpreted as such), nor did he like the way the man was now walking backwards ahead of him as if mocking his slowed pace. He knew he was showing the after-effects of his blood loss - he could feel the cold sweat on his brow and the shakiness of his hands -but he had been hoping the man would have been tactful enough not to mention it. He was sensing though that tact was not this man's strong suit.

"I am not about to pass out," Arthur replied irritably. "I know my own limits and I would not have allowed you to push me past them. My home is just outside the city and I will not be requiring your help to reach it." In truth, he knew now he should have interrupted the vampire's feeding sooner, but he would not admit that error. Doing so would not only wound his pride, but would also confirm his weakened state, something he was not prepared to do in front of this likely still hungry predator. Instead, he quickened his pace, standing straighter and maintaining a hardened expression. Exuding confidence and strength was more important than physical comfort at the moment. His body protested, but did as it was told. It was unlikely he would be able to keep it up for long, though.

The buildings around then were starting to be spaced farther and farther apart. They were more than halfway there. The night felt colder now, the full moon low in the sky ahead of them. Predictably, the wizard had slowed down again, though he still fought to hide his condition as much as possible. He was the one showing pity tonight, not the one to be pitied. He had no desire for the sympathy of others. He was strong, he didn't need anyone's sympathy... He didn't need anyone at all.

Arthur's pride had cost him in the past and it no doubt would cost him again, maybe even this very night.

He could see Arthur was being effected by the blood loss. It was obvious, and really, he had to wonder why the man had offered that blood, surely he'd known just how dangerous, and stupid it was.

In his current state, Gilbert didn't think Arthur could stand a chance against him. Not physically. But the threat of that sword/wand was still there, and it wouldn't be very... (what was the word? Honorable? .. eh. Something like that.) to attack him now.

And really, as delicious as his blood was, he had a feeling he'd just as soon wait, and see if the guy offered more at some point. Unlike most things, he thought, it would be worth the wait.

Taking note of the man's annoyed tone, he looked on in amusement at the show Arthur was putting on. If he'd still been mortal, he probably wouldn't have been able to tell it was just that. A show. As it was, he could hear the difference in heartbeat, breath-intakes. The sweat beading on his skin.

All these things had been obvious before, but now that he was focusing a bit, they were much more obvious. Clearer.

“Tch.” He shifted, and kept pace with Arthur easily. He slouched his shoulders a bit, taking up the posture he's walked with most of his life. Arms limp at his side, thumb hooked in one pocket, while the other hand just hung.

They were getting further from the city now. Leaving the base area that Gilbert had grown to know so well. The night was moving along quickly, far quicker than they were walking. There was still plenty of time, though. Though, he didn't recognize the area, and that bothered him. If he had too, he wouldn't be able to find a place to hide during the day, if the wizard decided to leave him out. He was faster than most humans yes, but long distances were hard to run.

Pushing those thoughts away, because, if it came to that, he was sure he could find a safe place to hide. There were some houses around, he could always take up temporary residence in one of them. He'd just have to chose wisely.

A seemingly normal and old-fashioned home loomed before them. It was made of stone and wood and was well-maintained. A cobblestone walkway led up to the entry-way steps and a garden with exotic-looking plants took up much of the small yard. It was of moderate size, at least above ground. A heavy wooden door leading underground several yards away from the house told of a spacious basement, one that likely predates the building itself. A meadow of tall grass separated this home from its nearest neighbor, which, if it’s darkened and dilapidated state was any indication, was quite abandoned.

By the time they had reached his home, Arthur felt unnaturally exhausted. He had an unfortunate tendency to forget his physical limitations, since they were so often boosted with his magic. When he was forced to face them, it made him feel weak, vulnerable, and above all, highly irritable. As powerful a sorcerer as he was, he was still mostly human and there was little he could do about that. He hoped he already had some of his restorative potion made and that it hadn’t gotten old and lost its potency. It would be a pain to have to make a fresh batch, especially since he had another potion planned. There was no way he would have time to make both before the night was over.

He strolled up the walkway, still attempting to mask his fatigue with a strong posture and confident air. He made it up the stairs and paused at the front door. Rather than fumble with keys or locks, he muttered more of the strange language. The door shimmered for a second, like the glint of moonlight against a spider’s web, as the spell over it was lifted. Arthur turned the knob and pushed the door open easily, stepping over the threshold. He took a few steps in, the warm air of the house bringing a bit more color to his cheeks. The interior was lit with low, but somewhat comforting lighting. It had a quaint, homey feel to it, decorated with warm colors, needlework art adorning the walls, modern conveniences like a small television set and kitchen appliances.

It was the perfect illusion

He turned back, looking at his guest. Now was as good a time as any to test what knowledge he already had figured out for himself. He stared on, silent, as the undead man approached the doorway.

He stopped in front of the door. It was common knowledge that Vampires couldn't enter a home without an invitation. He'd learned that the hard way, when he'd followed someone to their home from a club. He hadn't been able to get even a finger through the doorway. When he'd tried, a throbbing pain formed in the back of his head. Three days later, that pain had remained.

So, he stood there, by the door. Contemplating.

The Wizard had obviously invited him, but that hadn't been at the house, that had been back in the park. Would that still count? Was he willing to risk it? He really didn't like the idea of dealing with that headache again.

So he stood, waiting, impatiently. One hand in his pocket, the other arm hanging limp at his side. From his spot, he could make out some of the room, and it made him think of a magazine image. Cozy, yes, but hardly truthful. Deceptive.

He raised an eyebrow, watching Arthur watch him. “Well?”

He gave the vampire the slightest of nods. So there were some things he had learnt on his own. Modern day literature and popular culture was so saturated with the supernatural that it could be difficult for one new to that world to discern the truth from the myth.

“Good. It seems I will not have to start completely from scratch in your education. Come inside. The invitation stands until I revoke it, which I may do at any time, even if you are already within.”

He turned away from the man, his hands going to his neck to untie his cloak. He hung the heavy cloth on a hook by the door, his thin frame revealed from beneath it. He wore a sage green vest over a long sleeved white shirt and slacks to match. Like his home, he was deceptively normal in appearance, camouflaged to blend in with the rest of society. A seemingly delicate being hiding poison within. He took his wand from the cloak and slipped it into his belt at his side so he would have it at the ready.

A scent of vanilla and spice hung in the air, seemingly without source. This, too, was part of the ruse, there to conceal the smell of magic and potions from any unwanted guests. Arthur led the way through the living room. As warm and wholesome as the house appeared, not a single photograph adorned the room, though here and there, a slight discoloration of the wall told of a frame of some kind that had once hung there. In fact, there had once been many pictures, but Arthur had removed them for reasons of his own. He had destroyed most of them, but had kept a few, keeping them tucked away where no eye could fall on them.

They came to a door which Arthur opened to reveal stairs descending deep into the earth, some thirty feet. They were dark, save for the flicker of firelight that could be seen at the base and the artificial lighting that flowed in from behind them. He began to down the stairs, leaning a hand supportively against the cold stone wall in the absence of a banister. The stairs seemed longer tonight, the effort and focus required seemed greater. This creature had better be worth the inconvenience and irritation of this night, though Arthur still was not sure what he planned to do with the vampire, if he would do anything at all. He was no proponent of fate, but surely this chance encounter would yield something of value…

When they reached the bottom, the immense basement stretched out before them. It was divided into three chambers. To the left was a storage room, its door slightly ajar and through it could be seen drying herbs and colorful glass containers. To the right was a darkened doorway, whatever lay within it hidden by shadow. The heavy wooden door hung loose on its hinges and three deep scratches blemished the wood.

The main chamber where they stood was a sharp contrast to the floor above. The walls were made of dark stone and the room was lit by candles that seemed to burn eternally as well as a coal fireplace in the center of the room. Bookcases lined with old volumes and notepaper completely lined one wall. Near where they stood was a large wooden table covered with several of the strange candles, a few instruments, a mortar and pestle and several flasks, and a stack of books, one of which lay open in front of the only chair. To the side were two tall stools, covered with clutter and dusty with disuse. Various oddities were spaced about the room – cauldrons of varying sizes, bizarre instruments, a large map sprawled across one wall and lunar and star charts next to it, marked up with neat handwriting. Shelves covered with jars of preserved specimens were off to one side and above it all was the skull of an enormous beast with curved horns, a long snout, and a jaw filled with savage teeth.

Arthur left the vampire to take in his surroundings and walked to the storage room, opening the door wider and stepping inside. He eyed the labeled vials for a moment before finding the one he was looking for. He uncorked it and brought it to his nose. He frowned heavily. The potion didn’t remain stable for long once it was made and this one had turned. He cursed, throwing the container into a waste bin. He needed restorative potion; his strength and metal focus were suffering and any great exertion might incapacitate him all together. The potion he had planned to make required a full moon, and now he would have to wait another month to make it. At this rate he would never recapture it. He filled his arms with herbs and liquids and walked back into the main chamber, dumping them on the table, his expression annoyed.

The night was not even over and already Arthur resented the vampire

Nevertheless, Arthur would be busy for a moment and he may as well give the vampire…. Gilbert… something to occupy himself. “I trust you can read in English?” he said, not really waiting for an answer as he went to his bookcases. He ran a finger over a few of the spines, looking for the right one. He pulled out an old book with strange lettering across the cover and the notebook that had been beside it which contained his translations. He walked back and dropped them on the table, looking up at Gilbert as he did so.

“That should be enough to get you started.”

Arthur turned his attention to the ingredients before him and began to prepare them.

He didn't really know how to feel about that invitation, but it was what he got. He figured, he couldn't really blame the Sorcerer for taking precautions. He, himself, wouldn't have thought to do so, but he knew his brother would have. Generally, if it was something he knew Ludwig would do, it was either really boring, or really smart. Considering the taste of the man's blood was still so fresh on his tongue, he decided this was a smart move. However, he didn't much like the 'start from scratch' part.

Gilbert wasn't really the type of person anyone would consider a 'A+ student', or the type to have motivation for learning... but when he'd found out what he was, he had gone that extra mile to pick a few things up. He didn't always have the easiest time reading English, so it often took a lot of his concentration... which was always fleeting. He was pretty sure his dad had thought of getting him put on some medication for ADHD or something. Taking into consideration the things he'd heard about that stuff, he was glad he'd managed to get away before hand.

He stepped into the house, nose twitching at the strong scent of vanilla. His eyes scanned the room, catching things he hadn't seen from the doorway, but mostly looking for anything dangerous. Deciding this part of the house was safe, at least, he turned his gaze back to Arthur. Watching the Sorcerer shed his cloak, he couldn't help but notice just how fragile the man looked. He definitely didn't look like someone that would be dangerous.

Of course, Gilbert was aware that his own appearance wasn't one of overwhelming threat. Most people didn't notice anything abnormal about his appearance until they saw his eyes. He supposed, no, he knew that was the same case here. The man was small, almost scrawny looking without his cloak, but he was not someone to be trifled with. He took special note to the fact that he kept his wand, tucking it safely within reach.

He followed closely as the sorcerer led him deeper into the house. Taking note of the spots on the walls, slightly different in shade to the rest of the walls. The lack of pictures anywhere else. That, he decided, was probably the only creepy thing about the house so far. Made it seem so false.

He tensed when the door opened to the stairs, hesitating, before following down. He kept close, not bothered by the lack of light, as much as by the sudden shift from normal- if creepy- to something that looked like it belonged in a b-rated horror flick. He wouldn't have been surprised if the stairs led to a large stone room with candles all around and a big black coffin or something.

He was not completely disappointed. It was definitely something from a horror movie scene. Particularly the one door that hung on the hinges, looking like it had been attacked by something. Something big, and dangerous. His natural curiosity wanted to ask, but something told him he wasn't ready to know what had done that. Not just yet. When he squinted, he could make out shapes inside, a cage of sorts if he had to guess, but he'd have to move closer to be sure, and he had no desire to do so.

Forcibly, he turned his eyes to the rest of the room. Trying to ignore the creeped out feeling when he spotted the odd skull mounted to the wall, like some hunter's great prize. Sharp horns, and sharper teeth gleamed in the minimal light provided by the fire. He was tempted to disappear back up the steps. His eyes were glued to the skull, mind trying to locate the name and image of any animal he knew that would fit that thing. Nothing sprang to mind, and he jumped a bit when he heard items being dropped on the nearby table. His red eyes darted back to the Sorcerer, watching him closely.

He opened his mouth to respond to the question, but by the time an answer came to mind, the man was already looking at the books. He waited, staring hard at the books when they were placed before him.

The blond had moved on quickly, so Gilbert picked up the old book first, flipping through a few pages, taking in the brown, aged, paper, the odd letter system he couldn't place, and the worn images. The notebook proved to be filled with neat, scrawled, handwritten words in English. He could make out the words easily, but it took his mind a moment or two to translate them into something he could understand.

He glanced up at the Sorcerer, watching Arthur work with his leaves and whatever else he'd dragged out from wherever he'd gone. Deciding the man wouldn't be interested in anything else from Gilbert for a while, he bent over the corner of the table, opening both books, and finding a spot that looked about right for each.

Before, he could have blamed his trouble understanding the words on the fact that the light was so dim. Now, though, light wasn't an issue, it could have been pitch black, and with his body still warm with blood, he would have been able to make out the words. As it was, he had no excuse, other than his own faults. He hated that.

Squinting at the words, forcing his mind to focus on them, translate them from English into German. Placing each word, trying to remember that he spoke the language, so it shouldn't be so hard. But it took three times with some of the sentences, for their meanings to actually make sense.

Within the first few minutes of even trying to read this, he normally would have given up. For this, though, he knew how important it was to his survival, so he forced himself to keep trying. The neatly written words slowly taking vague meanings.

While in the middle of squinting at a particularly small sentence, he thought, that perhaps the man was tricking him. The sight of the dark room with the broken door and mangled cage flitted through his mind. He wasn't stupid enough to think this man was helping him out of the goodness of his heart. That was something even normal humans wouldn't do, especially not after their meeting.

But, then, he also wasn't foolish enough to think that he could learn all this on his own. By himself, he had no knowledge that he hadn't picked up from movies. He now knew there were other things out there that could cause him harm. He had assumed as much, but until tonight, had not seen them.

He wasn't ready to fight, if one of them decided to attack. This evening had proved it.

Closing his eyes for a moment, trying to force his focus. His eyes darted back to the wizard once or twice, drawn by the sounds he was making, but slowly, he began to make some progress with the books.

At first, what he made out seemed more like some legend. Something you'd hear an voice-over saying during the credits of a movie. Probably in a creepy, wispy sort of voice.

As he read, still struggling and fighting with the meanings of words, he eventually stopped noticing the Sorcerer. Mouthing words in English, to make it easier to remember their meaning. Slowly, he began to pick up the things the book actually said. Going over each sentence at least twice.

It read like a fairytale more than anything. He switched pages a few times, grabbing random pieces of information as he went, aided greatly by the images so painstakingly drawn in the original book. There were mentions of some goddess and the mixed blessing and curse of a vampire's power. Their weaknesses were mentioned, but not elaborated on, he assumed those would be further back in the book.

Arthur set to work on his task, keeping an eye on the vampire out of the corner of his eye, but only because ignoring such a creature would be unwise. Especially because Gilbert had already tasted Arthur’s blood. The sorcerer suspected the magic in his veins might contribute something to his blood and that this may have lead Gilbert to follow him with so little convincing. Knowledge was valuable, yes, but the potential for another meal may have been even more tantalizing. Arthur decided he should make a large batch of potion. He had no intention of letting Gilbert feed from him again, willingly or otherwise, but it was best to err on the side of caution.

He began slicing up ginger root, thinking about the various things which required his attention. His first priority was to recover his health. His fatigue had progressed to exhaustion and he very much craved sleep. But there were still several hours left to this night and he did not trust that Gilbert would not take advantage if he should be so vulnerable. When morning did come, where was he to put Gilbert? The basement was windowless and would be free of the deadly sunlight, but there were also things in which he did not want the vampire digging – things both dangerous and personal. There was always that room… But Arthur did not feel inclined to resort to that. The room was not currently secure and this seemed a fitting excuse. There was more to it than that, though.

Arthur frowned down as he started chopping the ginger into smaller pieces. With Gilbert huddled over the translations and thus occupied, Arthur was less distracted and this left his mind to dwell on the night’s events and the curiosity of his own behavior. He had acted without questioning his motivation, simply following the flow of the moment, something he had been doing with increasing frequency. Now he had to wonder exactly what had guided his actions. He did not care for the conclusions he came to. He had sympathized with Gilbert, had seen his own feelings of abandonment in the vampire who had been forsaken by his maker. Had identified with him… Arthur saw this as a weakness within himself. He didn’t want attachments and emotions to hold sway over him. Not anymore

He continued to prepare the ingredients – crushing foxglove, measuring out mint oil, boiling a combination of herbs for the broth – and referencing a large book every now and then to ensure he was using the correct amounts. With the herbs and liquids laid out and ready to go, Arthur walked to a wooden cabinet against the wall. Inside it were many small and identical vials made of red, semi-opaque glass and containing a thick liquid. He took one and shut the cabinet tight, placing the tiny container among the other ingredients

He absentmindedly wiped the cold sweat from his brow with his sleeve, feeling slightly light headed. The mixing smells of the herbs, which did not normally bother him, were having more of an effect in his current state. He fleetingly wished he still had someone around to assist him, but he quickly pushed that thought away. He was not weak, he was not sentimental, and he didn’t need any help. With stubborn resolve, he went off to the side where his cauldrons were stored and selected one of the larger ones. It was round and solid black, made of cast iron and heavy. In top condition, Arthur would still have had to strain to lift it. Now, goaded on by his own sense of frustration, it was foolhardy to try. For all his magical might, he was not especially strong physically unless amplified by his spells or potions, neither of which he felt inclined to fool with. His hands gripped white-knuckled on the handles of the cauldron and his arms shook with the force of lifting it. He managed well enough, though with great effort, until he was roughly three-quarters of the way to the central fireplace and his knees buckled beneath him. The cauldron hit the floor with a heavy thud that echoed against the stone walls of the basement, and Arthur fell upon it, still gripping the handles, pale and cursing under his breath.

Gilbert's head shot up at the sound of the cauldron hitting the floor. For a long moment he just stared, a bit confused, before he noticed the sorceror was laying on the floor. Using this as the perfect oppurtonity to get away from the headache forming from the books, he moved over to where Arthur was and helped the man to his feet. As much as he hated to be helping the man that had threatened to cut his heart out, he hated reading more, so this was a good distraction, right?

Grinning, he said, "Need a little help?"

And without waiting for a response, he moved over, lifting the heavy cauldron easily with one hand. He was aware that this was one of the perks of being a vampire, as a human, he would have been able to lift this heavy over-sized pot, but it would have taken both hands and good deal of effort. As he was now, it barely took anything at all.

Ignoring anything the Sorceror was saying, he took the cauldron over and set it on the table, clear of any of the things that Arthur had laid out.
