| He sensed the vampire's arrival and momentarily stopped his work, looking up for a second. Of course Gilbert would return during the trickiest and most dangerous task that came with preparing this potion. Really the wizard should have known better. He should have done this first, right after Gilbert left, or else waited until sunrise. But he was already started and couldn't very well stop now. He proceeded with extra caution, pausing whenever a sudden noise from above threatened to make his hand slip. If he was lucky, Gilbert would stay out of the way just ten minutes or so longer. Enough time for him to finish.
He was not lucky. Gilbert barged down the stars, making his appearance. He'd fed well from the look of him. His cheeks were slightly blushed and his eyes nearly pink. Arthur still hadn't decided if Gilbert was a bigger nuisance when hungry or fed. When he was hungry at least he was distracted, but of course he was whinier.
He raised an eyebrow at Gilbert before returning his attention to his work, very carefully trimming along one of the finer tendrils. "Mandrake," he answered simply. "It's delicate work and requires a careful hand, so keep quiet if you are going to loiter around here."

| Rolling his eyes, Gilbert took the book off the shelf, and moved to sit on the cot he'd been 'sleeping' on. Making himself comfortable, he opened the book to roughly where he had left off. He wouldn't get any reading done tonight, he knew that much, but he could at least make it look like he was attempting to make some progress.
He kept his gaze just over the edge of the book, thinking over mandrake. He recognized the word very loosely, knew he'd heard it somewhere, but just couldn't remember it. atching the wizard peel the creepy looking root, Gilbert strained to try and think of where he'd seen something like that.
"Zauberwurzel!" He stated, accidently shouting it, as it came to mind. The root had been used in a few movies he'd seen, and now that he remembered the name he'd known it by, he could think of a few stories with it in them.

| He paused in his work as Gilbert moved around, being extra cautious until Gilbert had settled down to read on his cot. The wizard watched him for a few more seconds, and when it seemed like Gilbert could manage to stay still for at least a few minutes longer, he returned to skinning the root. There was not much left to go on it. Just a few crevices and tendrils and then it would be all ready for boiling. It was the broth that he really needed for his potion.
He was unaware that Gilbert had begun eyeing him, so focused on his work as he was. It would have been some forewarning if he had. As it was though, the sudden and inexplicable shout startled him, causing his hand to slip and his knife to puncture the mandrake root.
Arthur realized what had happened, but not quick enough to do anything about it other than drop his knife and throw his hands over his ears as a deafening shriek suddenly filled the room. The wizard squeezed his eyes shut but he could not block out the pain that struck him, his head feeling like it was going to split open, his heart feeling as if it was thrown out of rhythm by the vibrations from the noise that reverberated inside his chest. His breath caught and his consciousness swam. He was afraid to reach for his wand, for he would have to expose himself to the sound unguarded to do so. And with his breathing stiffled, he could cast no spells. He fought it for a few seconds, taking a few steps towards the stairs and potential safety if he could only get out of the room. But he didn't make it far. His eyes rolled up in his head and he collapsed on the stone floor.

| The sound of the plant's screeching threw him off guard. He hadn't thought the thing could actually do that, had assumed the wizard's need for silence was his need to get it done perfectly. Now he knew where he'd been wrong, and regretted his mistake. Hhis head reeled with the shrieking, it bit into his over sensitive hearing and made his head ache. But, not being alive, meant it was harder to force unconsciousness, something Gilbert felt was more a curse then a blessing right now.
Through swimming vision, he saw the wizard make an attempt to get to the stairs, and was surprised to see him drop. Gilbert knew that Arthur was technically human, but it was hard to see him as succh most of the time. What with his magic, and all to real threats. It was easier to imagine the man as somehow impervious to normal dangers.
Dropping the book, Gilbert pushed his energy, moving quickly to scoop the unconscious wizard up, and rush up the stairs. The speed of a vampire came in great handy as he ran, the door slamming hard behind him to block out the wails. It wasn't a perfect fix to the sound, but it was enough.
Taking a moment to catch his breathe, he left the hall, and made his way into the living room. He would have taken the wizard into his bedroom, but that was a territory, Gilbert wasn't quite ready to face just yet. So, hhe laid Arthur outt on the couch, and sat on the floor with his back to it, rubbing at his pounding temples, muttering under his breath, "Fuckin' hell, ya should have told me it would do that."

| He blacked out completely until the sounds of the mandrake's wails became muffled by the closed door. The absence of the violent noise vibrations enabled him to breath again, though it was a struggle at first for his body to make his lungs open up. His heart kept an odd rhythm and seemed to be picking up the pace as if to make up for it. A low moan came from him as he sensed himself being moved, his consciousness slipping in and out while his body attempted to recover itself. The plant's cries still echoed in his head, but it was fading away gradually. During the spells when he was awake, his head ached something terrible and he could not find the strength to move, even as he felt himself placed down somewhere... the couch from the feel of it... He wondered vaguely how he got there and why he wasn't dead.
Something warm and wet trickled from his ears, but he could not even lift his arm to wipe it away. Nor would his eyes open so that he could get some sense of what had happened. He remembered his hand slipping and piercing the mandrake...
Gilbert... He was the only explanation as to why Arthur was still alive. And the reason he had nearly perished to begin with.
His energy was slowly returning and so was his ability to think. Why would the vampire have saved him? He didn't need Arthur to be alive... He only needed the shelter and information he could provide, and neither actually required Arthur to have a pulse. The wizard would have thought it the logical and easy route for the vampire to have let him die there in the basement. Its what he would have done in Gilbert's place. Maybe the vampire just wasn't confident enough to be on his own...
With effort, he forced his eyes open and blinked in the light of his living room. Now that he almost couldn't hear the mandrake's screams in his head anymore, everything seemed so unnaturally quiet. With another groan, he turned his head and saw the vampire sitting on the floor beside him. "Bloody...fucking idiot...."

| He couldn't help but feel relieved when he heard the man's heart pick up, his breathing start again. Gilbert was half certain that Arthur's first words would be to revoke the invitation that he'd just allowed Gilbert. It wasn't though, and even as he flinched away, he was relieved.
The smell of blood reached his nose, and Gilbert was glad he'd fed before returning to the house. Turning his head to look at Arthur, he gave him a worried look, "Didn't know it'd do that."
His voice had come out quiet, and despite his attempt to force smug indifference, the worry was obvious. He didn't want the wizard to die. Gilbert had grown accustomed to leaving death wherever he went, but he had no desire to do such a thing to the man that offered him a place to stay and a chance to learn to protect himself against a world he knew nothing about. "You'll be okay, ja? Not gonna keel over und die?"

| He was sure he was still reeling from the mandrake and thus was delirious. Gilbert actually looked concerned and that didn't make any sense at all. Maybe he didn't want to be alone, but he should have had no reason to be actually worried about Arthur's well being.
The wizard shifted and attempted to sit up, but immediately gave up on that idea, finding the movement too difficult and the dizziness that resulted from it not worth it in the slightest. He growled in frustration and settled back down against the couch cushions, shooting an accusatory glare at the vampire because this was all his fault. Saving the wizard's life only meant so much if the same person was the one who put it in danger.
He saw Gilbert's lips moving and heard some kind of warbled sound result from it, as if from underwater. Then he remembered the feeling of wetness at his ears. Blood, no doubt. The mandrake must have ruptured his eardrums or simply caused enough hemorrhaging to affect his hearing. Either way, Arthur would have to use magic to repair the damage. Groaning again, he lifted his hand to place it at the side of his head, covering his ear, and began lowly muttering the incantation of his healing spell. It took longer than normal to get it going... He still felt so weak... If the vampire had a change of heart and decided to kill him, there would be nothing he could do about it.
Eventually though, the familiar glow returned and his ear stopped bleeding, sound slowly returning to him. He sighed when finished and let his arm drop, even that small spell making him feel like he wanted to pass out again. The other ear would have to wait until later. The question that was bothering him could not, however. "Why.... Why did you bother saving me?"

| As the other started to move, Gilbert looked ahead. His hands turned into fists, eyes dark, as he stared at the wall across from him. Part of him wanted to turn and help the wizard sit up. But, it wouldn't do good, he could feel it was a bad idea. He licked his lips, and continued to stare ahead, as he listened to the famiiliar sound of Arthur's healing spell. Tensing when the wizard finally spoke.
The question was valid. It could have benefitted Gilbert quite a lot if the wizard had died. He'd have a safe place to stay, and no time limit on how long he had to read those books. It would make things much easier on him. But he didn't know all that well how to explain his reasoning. It wasn't much different from the very reason he'd come back to the wizard with his tail tucked between his legs.
Gilbert kept finding himself bending to Arthur. The urge to be around him, to please him. the need to be near. He wasn't sure what to think of it, and he refused to try and explain that to the man. He wasn't about to try and explain all that.
Shrugging his shoulders, Gilbert stared at the wall. "Why shouldn't I have?"

| Gilbert was not giving him a real answer and that was annoying. Arthur's aching head had no further room for annoyance so his answer was blunt with heavy tones of frustration. "Because I'm an obstacle to you! It might have been your clumsiness and idiocy that caused that mess, but there is no logical reason as to why you would pass up an easy opportunity to get me out of the way... Nnngh..." He closed his eyes again, wincing because raising his voice made his head throb. He didn't even know why he was making this argument. He certainly didn't want to die. But he was confused and he did not handle confusion well, particularly in his current state.
Gilbert did not even appear to have suffered at the mandrake's wail. Being dead and inhuman apparently had it's advantages. It seemed unfair though, given that the whole ordeal was his fault. He ought to ban him from the house again, if for no other reason than to make him suffer as he deserved to. It would be a wise choice, after the vampire had nearly killed him, accident or not. But Arthur didn't revoke the invitation, against his better judgement.

| Gilbert shifted a little, uncomfortably. Arthur made a good point, and no half assed answer would please him. He couldn't think of a good answer to give that would come easily. He leaned heavily against the ccouch, and tilted his head back, "I didn't mean to hurt you."
It was the best he felt he could do. It wasn't good enough. But it was all he had. He knew he could not give an answer that would please Arthur. He was half tempted point out the bond he felt making itself stronger with every night, but that felt like it would have been a very poor move. So he kept his mouth shut.
Gilbert's knees pulled up, chin resting on them, arms wrapped loosely around them.

| That was not quite the answer Arthur had been expecting. It sound like more than just the shame that came with being insulted and scolded. It sounded like true regret... maybe even an apology. Though that only served to make Arthur more confused and his head throb in response. He raised his hand again and used it to cover his eyes and shield them from the light.
"I told you to keep quiet... I told you that I needed to focus. Why can't you ever fucking listen..." He was scolding again, yes, but there was no force in his words. Not enough strength to put anger behind them.
He tilted his head to the side, momentarily unshielding his eyes to glare accusingly at Gilbert. But the vampire was already huddled up on himself, looking rather guilty and pathetic. Not the sort of thing Arthur expected from him. The wizard blinked a few times before returning his hand over his vision and scoffing. "Pssh..."

| He didn't flinch under the scolding. He knew he was in the wrong, but he also knew himself well enough to know that he'd forget it soon enough. Once Arthur was up and going, Gilbert would feel no guilt over it until it was brought up again. He tightened his hold on his legs a little, tilting his head to the side to restt his cheek on his knees.
Feeling uncomfortable with the fallen silence, Gilbert shifted, and slowly got up to his feet. He brushed his jeans off, was careful not to look directly at the wizard, just glanced at him, taking in how pale and weak he looked, before turning away. "I'll... go make some tea..."

| He didn't say anything for a while, letting things go quiet. There would be more scolding to come, certainly. But for the moment, Arthur jut didn't have the will or the energy. He just wanted to lay there and let his aches subside. He probably should finish healing himself... at least his other ear, which he still could not really hear out of. The blood drying against his skin and in his hair certainly didn't feel good, so cleaning up needed to be done too. But he just couldn't find it in him just yet. He really wanted to sleep....
He kept his hand over his eyes, if for no reason other than to avoid having to look at Gilbert and the sad state he was in. Considering that the mandrake had hardly affected the vampire, it hardly seemed he had the right to look so pathetic... How could he possibly be that remorseful?
Hearing Gilbert moving, Arthur peeked out from under his hand for a moment, though he made no movement himself. Tea...? Did the vampire even know how to make tea? Not knowing what else to say, the wizard just gave a small grunt of acknowledgment and let his hand cover his eyes again as Gilbert walked away.
He almost wanted to tell Gilbert to knock it off. It was unnerving, him being so reserved and apologetic. But with him out of the room, it was easier to relax and so much quieter... And as the smell of tea brewing began to drift in the air, his fatigue became impossible to fight. He drifted off, his hand falling from where it had covered his eyes to rest against the couch cushion beside his head.

| He was quick to get out of the living room. Could feel the wizard's gaze on him as he left, it just urged him to hurry along. Gilbert found solace in the kitchen he never had before. It had been a long time since he'd been in a kitchen with the intent to make something. Hesitatinng for a moment, he used his nose to hunt down where the tea bags were, and put the kettle on to heat while he got out a mug.
He had seen Arthur make so many cups of tea that finding the tea bags was the hardest thing to do. As the water heated, Gilbert thought of the liquor cabinet, and was tempted to add some whiskey to the tea.... but one wasn' t supposed to drink with a concussion, he assumed this was similar. No whiskey for Arthur, then.
When the kettle whistled, he poured the water into the mug and left it to steep, trying to find something to do with himself. He resisted the urge to check on Arthur, instead, he took this moment to look in the fridge to see what kind of food was there. Gilbert had never paid much attention to what Arthur ate- when he wanted normal food himself, he ate out. Burgers and other easy cheap food.
Going through the motions when the tea was finished steeping, he added sugar and milk in the same amounts he'd seen Arthur use. Gilbert had never been a tea drinker. He drank beer, or soda, now mostly blood. Tea was not high on his list of wanted drinks, so though he was almost certain he knew how to make Arthur's tea, he couldn't help double guessing himself, and adding more then originally planned.
He lingered in the kitchen as long as he could, not sure what to do with himself, just knowing he didn't want to return to the living room. It took him a while, before he realized the tea would get cold before he found an actual reason to stay in the kitchen, so he picked the still steaming cup up, and left the kitchen, only to find the wizard had fallen asleep. Lingering in the doorway to the living room, he bit down on his lip, eyeing the wizard, and moved into the room quietly, setting the cup down on the coffee table.

| He only stirred slightly at the sound of the teacup being set down on the coffee table, quick to settle down to relative stillness. He was thoroughly worn and exhausted, but his sleep was light and fitful. It usually was, to some degree. Arthur rarely slept well. Alcohol was usually the only thing that properly put him out. But now it was an especially uneasy sleep. Perhaps it was due to the light overhead and the tricks it played on his mind. Perhaps it was a side effect of his injuries or of the mandrake itself. But the dreams and visions that always plagued his sleep were especially vivid.
The smell of tea brought on memories of earlier days. The light above made his sleeping mind think of sunshine. Recollections that Arthur kept so well hidden that he often forgot they were there bubbled to the surface of his sleeping mind. And even still, he tried to fight them off. They were unpleasant, unwanted.
He shifted in his sleep, his eyes moving behind his closed eyelids and his breath hitching here and there as if he were going to say something and then stopped before any sound came out. He turned his head towards the back of the couch and away from the light, rejecting it. He wanted none of it.
He only vaguely sensed the vampire's presence in the room. With the stir of other things, Arthur's mind didn't pay all that much attention to it.

| The wizard's obvious discomfort set Gilbert on edge. He'd never seen the wizard sleep. The man's room was off limits, and despite his curiousity and natural habit of pushing himself into other's personal space, this was something he'd never thought of invading. It seemed like the number one way to get himself killed- and since Arthur never slept anywhere else, and certainly not at night when Gilbert was active, he couldn't tell if the wizard's tossing and breathing pattern were normal or not.
They seemed wrong though. He shifted a little, biting at his lip in worry, wondering suddenly if making the tea had been a waste of time. He was thinking it likely was. Picking at his hoodie a little anxiously, Gilbert moved closer to the couch, almost expecting Arthur to turn back towards him and yell at him. When the man didn't, Gilbert knelt down by the couch, and reached out as if to make physical contact, then drew his hand away again before actually doing so.
Instead, Gilbert got up and ventured into the hall, pausing in front of basement door. He could hear the thing still shrieking, could have heard it from anywhere in the house if he focused. But the sound was tampering off, it would likely stop soon. He moved passed the door, hesitating, before moving towards Arthur's room. He didn't even know if he could enter the room.
After a long while of staring at the door apprehensively, he turned back and went back into the living room. Sitting down with his back against the couch, by Arthur's middle, Gilbert curled his knees up to his chest and stared across the room at the turned off tv, not sure what to do.

| His fitful, uneasy sleep continued as such for a while. Sometimes, it would appear as if he had settled down, his breathing becoming easy and regular for a few minutes and his movements stilling. But then it would start up again, the rapid eye movements and the tossing and turning, the twitching of his fingers.
His dreams were without sense of time or place. Just flashes of images or sounds or smells. Memories and half thoughts strung together like mismatched beads on a string. They were growing progressively stressful. Arthur frowned and fidgeted in his sleep,
Somewhere in the back of his mind, he sensed Gilbert's movement, noticed his absence and his return. But it was so hard to distract from the dreams....
It was getting worse. The dreams were darker, more disturbing. Arthur's movements were more fretful. The instability of them was affecting his composure - his handle on his magic. The hairs on his arms stood up as if electrified due to the magic seeping into the air around him.
And then the dream seemed to climax. Arthur flinched and jerked, as if startled or pained, and above his and Gilbert's heads, the overhead light sizzled with electricity and then the bulbs simultaneously shattered with a loud pop and crack, sending the room into darkness.

| With Arthur's growing restlessness, Gilbert found himself getting more and more worried. He watched the wizard through the corner of his eye, and as the feel of Arthur's magic started to thicken the air, Gilbert inched away a little. He didn't know what he was supposed to do.
Should he leave the wizard alone? Wake him up? How would Arthur react? Would his magic lash out? It seemed like an awful big risk to take. So Gilbert hunched down a little and tried to make himself a smaller target. He hadn't done this since he was younger, when Ludwig was too little to understand their parents fighting and Gilbert took to hiding in closets or under the bed.
When the wizard woke, and the sound of the lightbulbs shattering, that quick flash nearly blinding him before the room went black, made Gilbert tense and curl furthur into himself for a moment. A few seconds of his eyes squeezed shut, and body still, not even breathing, he forced himself to relax.
The dark didn't bother him. He could see just fine, as if the lights hadn't been turned out at all, it was actually nicer that way, there was always the slightest twinge of pain that came from artifical lights. It was ignorable.
When he relaxed, loosening his hold on his knees, and turning slightly to look at Arthur's, eyes bright in the dark, "Arthur...?"

| He blinked in the darkness, startled awake by his own outburst. For a moment, he didn't remember where he was or what had happened. Then, as the aches in his body and head returned and he was reminded by the sticky feel of the blood still in his hair, he remembered the incident in the basement and why he was in the living room. He did not know why it was dark, however. Had Gilbert switched off the light when he returned to find Arthur dozed off? He supposed it was possible...
His eyes gradually adapted to the darkness, thanks largely from the bit of light that filtered in from the kitchen. He attempted to rise, but a wave of dizziness forced him to lie back down. That's right... he still hadn't healed that other ear... He would have to take care of that shortly.
He heard his name and turned his head to face the open living room. Gilbert, with his paleness and white hair, was easy to pick up in the dark. Why was he curled up like that? And sitting in the dark?
"Gilbert...?" He muttered, his voice showing his confusion while he was not quite alert enough to block it out. "What are you doing...?"

| Glad to hear Arthur's voice, to get a verbal response that wasn't the attack he was waiting for, Gilbert shrugged half heartedly. He leaned back against the couch, letting himself uncurl, arms falling to his sides. "Waiting."
He couldn't say exactly what for. He knew he shouldn't care if the wizard was okay. Even if it had been all his fault that Arthur had gotten hurt, he was a vampire, for fuck's sake. But he did care, and he was worried that he'd caused some permanent damage to the other. He'd asked for a second chance, and it looked very much like he'd blown it. He wouldn't have been surprised if Arthur got his senses back and immediately revoked his invitation. Which would be horrible. Where would he go? What would he do with himself? He didn't think another bottle of whiskey could fix this mistake.
All he could do was hope that Arthur would take pity on him, (which was highly unlikely, he knew) and not kick him out. Maybe there was something else Gilbert could do to make up for it. Something that he was actually capable of...
Biting his lip nervously, Gilbert shifted, turning to face the wizard a little more easily. Trying to think of what he could do, he decided at last that he could at least clean up the mess of broken glass, and maybe make another cup of tea, since he couldn't be sure none of the shattered glass had gotten into it.

| "Waiting? What the hell for?" he replied, genuinely confused by the response. Maybe it was the effects of the mandrake, but Gilbert seemed to be especially obtuse tonight. Arthur couldn't understand the motivations behind a single one of his actions or words since his rescue from the basement. He didn't get why Gilbert was remorseful... or pretending to be, nor why he was doing these apologetic little favors like making tea. He was certainly expecting some kind of retaliation for his screw up, judging from the wide berth he was giving the wizard, yet he still did not take advantage of Arthur's weakened state, instead choosing to wait even though he seemed to expect being punished. It didn't make any sense to Arthur at all.
Arthur also didn't get why he didn't feel the desire to get rid of the vampire either. A few words and he could send the vampire reeling. But he didn't, as much as his logic told him he should. It was bizarre and frustrating and Arthur didn't want to think about it any more.
Groaning, he slid his arm between himself and the couch and used it to push himself up. He was immediately hit with a wave of vertigo, but he pushed passed it. He refused to just lay prone on the couch. He managed to get to a sitting position , his arms bracing his upper body against his legs and his head hanging. Blackish streaks of drying blood darkened the skin around his ear and neck, hardening in his hair in a very unpleasant fashion. He needed to get clean and get to his own bed where he was protected and could relax.

| Since he very well couldn't explain what he didn't know himself, Gilbert just hunched a little away from the question, not even attempting to answer it. He watched Arthur carefully, tensing slightly as the other moved, and wondering if he offered to help, how Arthur would react to it. Sensing he'd likely just be pushed away and told off, Gilbert stayed quiet and mostly still.
Even so, he kept a close eye on the wizard, ready to move if he started to fall. He fidgeted, and tilted his head a little, trying to not look like the guilty party he felt he was. He was failing, he knew. But he was ready to do whatever was needed to make up for his folly, and struggled to find the words to express that- there were none his pride would allow though.
"I.... I'll clean up the glass." He finally said, his voice soft, as he stood and went to hunt for the broom, returning with it and the dustpan a moment later, to clean broken tea-cup and lightbulbs.

| He was not entirely sure how glass got to be everywhere in the first place, but he had the sense it was his doing. He was aware that he sometimes let out bursts of magic during fitful sleep, having found enough broken teacups and cracked windows upon waking to have figured it out. He supposed this had been another instance of that and it was slightly embarrassing to know that the vampire had witnessed it. Not that Arthur had anything to prove as far as Gilbert was concerned, but he saw the inability to keep his magic reeled in as well as his fitful sleep as weaknesses. He didn't like anyone seeing him in such a moment of weakness.
"No, just....stop..." he said in a frustrated tone when the vampire returned, waving his hand dismissively before returning it to clutch at his aching head. "Stop cleaning up and making tea and cowering like an abused dog. You fucked up, yes, I should toss you out, yes, but if I haven't done it yet, I don't suppose I'm going to." He rubbed at his temples as if it would help. It didn't. "It's too strange with you acting like that, so stop. It puts me on edge."

| Looking at Arthur, somewhat confused, Gilbert held the broom loosely, and tried to gauge if he really should stop or not. Really, he was used to being made to clean up his own messes (and usually did so without a problem), and wasn't sure how to take being told not too. He shifted the broom from one hand to the other.
"I..... okay...." He eyed the wizard, at least relieved to hear he most definitely won't be kicked out, and it sounded like Arthur wasn't planning on punishing him- which he was very doubtful of. He was almost certain that all this would blow over and Arthur would bring it up at random at some point in the future and punish him then. Gilbert felt this was a needlessly cruel thing, and so it fit the wizard all too well.
"Can I... do anything?" He wasn't sure what to offer. He didn't think offering directly to help with something would be a good idea. Arthur would strike that down, and just going and doing it had proved useless, so he was putting it out there, the offer, and hoping Arthur would take him up on it. Though he doubted that a lot.

| "Just...do as you normally do. Skulk about, waste time in front of the television, go hunting for your next meal." His voice was subdued and lacking in impact. He just wanted to leave this situation and escape to his room where he didn't have to deal with it. "I don't really care what you do. I'm going to clean up and go to bed. I've had enough of this night..."
He made to stand and from the get go he could see it was not going to be easy. His balance was horribly thrown by the damage that remained to one ear. He couldn't stand without steadying himself on something. Yet he wasn't sure if he had the strength and focus to heal it. He didn't want to attempt it in front of the vampire just in case he couldn't manage it just yet. He'd shown enough weakness to him for one night.
He got as far as the entry to the hallway when the vertigo caused his stomach to lurch and he had to suppress the urge to be sick. He wasn't sure if the nausea was a direct or secondary cause of the mandrake, but he was feeling it now. But being sick was another thing he refused to display in front of Gilbert. He shut his eyes and pushed to quicken his pace to the bathroom, ignoring the vampire entirely and shutting the door firmly behind him.
